Overview

pfSense combines firewall and routing functions in software that can be deployed on selected hardware, virtual machines, and cloud instances. That choice suits environments where the operator wants to select the underlying platform rather than buy a specific appliance. Azure and AWS marketplaces provide another route to deployment, including in their US GovCloud regions.

The USB installer overwrites the entire hard drive and cannot preserve another operating system in a dual-boot setup. Treat installation as a dedicated-device or dedicated-drive decision, not a casual test on a computer you still need for other work.

Key features

Firewall and routing

Stateful packet inspection and policy-based blocking let administrators control traffic against network rules. Policy-based routing, static routes, and simultaneous IPv4 and IPv6 support extend its usefulness beyond a simple gateway, particularly for networks with multiple routing requirements. These controls reward an operator willing to manage network configuration; they are less compelling for someone who wants a basic router with little administration.

Intrusion prevention and VPN

The security feature set includes IDS/IPS, Snort packet analysis, Suricata rules, IP block lists, and application detection. VPN support spans IPsec, OpenVPN, and WireGuard, with both site-to-site and remote-access use. That combination makes pfSense a credible fit for organizations connecting offices and remote users, though it also puts security and configuration decisions in the hands of the operator.

Authentication, updates, and support

RADIUS and LDAP can serve as VPN authentication sources, while Azure and name.com are named as dynamic DNS providers. Netgate publishes security advisories and accepts vulnerability reports that describe the issue, affected product and versions when known, and a plausible workaround. Netgate Global Support covers installation, deployment, and configuration issues for self-installed and virtual software, giving operators a support route beyond appliance purchases.

Pricing

pfSense uses a freemium model, with free software and paid deployment options. The Community Edition is free and open source, providing firewall and router software. It suits users who want the core distribution without paying for a commercial deployment option.

pfSense Plus Software is offered for one instance at custom pricing. pfSense Plus Cloud is available through Amazon and Azure marketplaces for virtual-machine deployment, with 30-day software trials available. These options suit cloud users and those evaluating Plus, but the trial period is not a substitute for a stated ongoing price.

For third-party hardware, pfSense Plus starts at 129.00 USD per year, billed annually, and includes the Netgate Installer. This keeps the hardware choice open, but adds a recurring software cost. On Netgate appliances, pfSense Plus starts at 189.00 USD per once; the software is included at no charge with the appliance, and support and warranty options vary by appliance. That route suits buyers who want a turnkey device, while the appliance purchase is the entry point.

Platforms

pfSense supports Linux, self-hosted, and web platforms, with a hybrid deployment model. It can run on selected hardware, virtual machines, and cloud instances; the project describes pfSense as the software portion of a firewall. The breadth is useful for organizations choosing their own deployment, but the USB installation constraint rules it out for machines that must retain another operating system in a dual-boot arrangement.

Who it's for

Netgate identifies home and remote workers, businesses, government, education, and service providers as users of pfSense Plus. Its range of firewall, routing, VPN, and intrusion-prevention functions makes it most suitable for people in those settings who can take responsibility for deployment and configuration. A user seeking a simple, non-destructive installation alongside an existing OS should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Firewall, routing, IDS/IPS, and three VPN protocols in one distribution suit networks with varied security and connectivity needs.
Pros: Hardware, virtual-machine, and cloud deployment let operators choose where the software runs.
Pros: Apache 2.0 licensing and a free Community Edition provide an open-source path without a software purchase.
Cons: The USB installer erases the whole drive and does not support dual boot, requiring a dedicated target.
Cons: The paid third-party hardware option starts at 129.00 USD per year, and the Netgate appliance option starts at 189.00 USD per once.

Alternatives

For a different firewall option, compare Arista NG Firewall, which has a free plan with basic security and connectivity features but limited capabilities. IPFire is worth considering if a free, open-source firewall operating system with no feature tiers or licence renewals is the priority. OPNsense is another freemium option with self-hosted and web platforms. Endian Firewall Community is a free Linux option.

NethSecurity is a freemium alternative whose maker describes it as fully open source. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Secret Management is a free API and web service for secret management rather than a firewall distribution. Sangfor EasyConnect is a paid option spanning desktop, mobile, and web platforms. Cato SASE Platform is a paid option with pricing by request.

Verdict

Choose pfSense if you need a configurable firewall and router with intrusion prevention and site-to-site or remote-access VPN across hardware, virtual, and cloud deployments. Its strongest reason to buy is that breadth paired with an open-source free edition; its clearest reason to pass is the destructive installer, alongside paid Plus costs when a commercial deployment is needed. It is a capable choice for operators prepared to manage their network, not for a machine that must dual boot or a user looking for a low-touch setup.
