Overview

Dagger is a code-first continuous integration stack for developers who want pipeline logic to run locally as well as in the cloud. Its strongest case is portable execution paired with reusable project checks; teams should weigh the paid plan’s seat and event ceilings against their workload.

Rather than requiring a CI workflow file for every check, Dagger Cloud Checks can start from GitHub events. That makes Dagger a compelling option for teams standardizing checks in code, but less compelling for buyers whose priority is a conventional container-building tool rather than a CI system.

Key features

Portable execution: Pipeline logic can run locally or in Dagger Cloud on a portable DAG engine. Automatic caching and end-to-end tracing support repeatability and visibility, which is useful when developers need to work with the same logic in different environments.
GitHub Cloud Checks: Checks can run after events such as pushes or pull requests without a CI workflow file. GitHub repositories connect to Dagger Cloud and run checks on Cloud Engines. This reduces workflow-file overhead for those checks, though the described integration is specifically centered on GitHub.
Official modules: Modules cover testing, linting, formatting, type checking, browser tests and Helm chart validation. They are extensible in a preferred language, offering a practical starting point without locking teams into a single module language.
Run visibility: Individual includes workflow and function logs, function call traces, workflow cache visibility and pre-push visibility. Team adds module insights and a module catalog, alongside workflow visibility and GitHub Checks integration.
Build capabilities: Dagger supports multi-architecture builds, a local build-cache backend and build-secret handling. Those capabilities suit build pipelines with varied target architectures or credentials; the stated cache backend choice is local.

Pricing

Individual — 0.00 USD per free: One user, 1,000,000 monthly events, one month of run history and community support. It includes workflow and function logs, traces, cache visibility, pre-push visibility and GitHub Checks integration. This is a credible starting point for an individual, but the single-user cap and shorter history make it a poor fit for a team that needs shared access or longer investigations.

Team — 50.00 USD per month: Billed $50 per month after a 2 week trial, for up to 10 users, 10,000,000 monthly events, one year of run history and email support. It adds module insights and a module catalog to workflow visibility and GitHub Checks integration. The expanded event allowance and history make it more suitable for an active team, though organizations above 10 users need another arrangement.

Enterprise — custom pricing: User and monthly event allowances require contacting Dagger; the plan includes 24/7 premium support. SSO and managed single-tenant deployment are Enterprise contact items, making this the relevant tier for buyers evaluating those options.

The free plan’s million-event allowance is substantial for an individual, but it does not remove the one-user ceiling. The Team trial lasts two weeks, after which the stated price is 50.00 USD per month. Choose based on both event volume and the run-history window, not just the headline price.

Platforms

Dagger supports Linux, macOS, Windows, web and self-hosted use. The CLI installation instructions cover macOS, Linux and Windows, and Dagger documentation includes a self-hosting guide. That mix gives developers local and self-hosting options alongside cloud use, while the listed CLI platforms are narrower than the overall platform set.

Who it's for

Dagger suits developers and teams that want CI logic expressed as code, portable between local execution and the cloud, with reusable modules and GitHub-triggered checks. Individual is best for one-person use; Team fits groups of up to 10 users that can use its larger event allowance and longer history. It is less suited to teams that exceed those limits without Enterprise terms, or buyers seeking only a free container-image builder.

Pros and cons

Pro: Pipeline logic can run locally or in Dagger Cloud, with caching and tracing supporting repeatable, inspectable runs.
Pro: Cloud Checks can start from GitHub events without a CI workflow file, and official modules cover a broad set of common project checks.
Pro: Individual offers one million monthly events at no charge, while Team raises the allowance to ten million and extends history to one year.
Con: Individual is capped at one user and one month of run history, limiting its usefulness for shared team operations.
Con: Team costs 50.00 USD per month after a two-week trial and is capped at 10 users; larger needs require Enterprise contact.
Con: Cloud Checks are described around GitHub repositories, so buyers centered on another Git provider should not assume the same flow.

Alternatives

Choose BuildKit instead if you need a free, Apache License 2.0 container build toolkit rather than Dagger’s CI stack. Garden is another freemium option, with a free tier limited by build minutes, cache hits and cache retention; its Enterprise plan includes secrets management, RBAC and self-hosting.

Pick Tilt if an open-source, Apache-2.0 free option on Linux, macOS or Windows is the fit. AWS CodeBuild is worth considering when usage-based billing for compute resources according to build duration and selected compute type suits your needs.

Cloud Native Buildpacks Pack is a free CLI and Go library with no paid plans listed. Jib is a free option specifically for open-source Java container building tools. Buildah is a free, open-source command-line tool, and Kaniko is a free option for building container images from Dockerfiles, distributed as container images.

Verdict

Choose Dagger if you want CI logic that travels between local and cloud execution, backed by reusable checks and GitHub-triggered Cloud Checks. Its main advantage is that portable, code-first workflow; its main trade-off is the plan structure, with Individual limited to one user and Team limited to 10 before Enterprise contact. Look elsewhere if those caps do not fit or if your need is only a free container-building tool.
