Overview

Avocado is a free, open-source PlayStation 1 emulator for Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. It suits players who want broad file support and save controls and can supply a console BIOS. Its feature set is promising, but early development means some games may fail to start or crash soon after.

Key features

Avocado loads .cue, .bin, .img, .chd, .ecm, .exe, .psexe, .psf, and .minipsf files by drag and drop. That range gives users options for disc images as well as executable and audio-related formats. Save states, quick save, quick load, and a one-second rewind provide useful ways to recover or revisit recent play.

Input support covers digital controllers, DualShock, and mouse, with two controllers supported at once. That works for typical two-player sessions, but the lack of multitap makes it a poor fit for games that need more simultaneous players. Audio support includes XA-ADPCM and Red Book, and graphics use hardware rendering through OpenGL.

Anti-Modchip and LibCrypt-protected games are supported. PAL LibCrypt titles need additional .SBI or .LSD subchannel information, which adds a file-preparation step. Avocado also requires a BIOS from a real console, placed in the data/bios directory; the first run prompts users to select one. This is a substantial setup requirement for anyone expecting to install and play without locating separate system files.

The emulator is single-threaded and hard-syncs audio to NTSC 60 Hz. That can cause stuttering audio in PAL games, so users focused on PAL playback should weigh this limitation alongside variable game compatibility.

Pricing

Avocado has one free plan: 0.00 USD per free. There is no paid tier or free trial to compare. The trade-off is not price but readiness: users must provide a PlayStation BIOS, and game compatibility varies while development remains early.

Platforms

Avocado runs on Windows 7 or later, macOS 10.13 or later, and Linux Ubuntu 16.04 or later, as well as Android. Desktop use requires an OpenGL 3.1 GPU and an SSE3-compatible x86 or x64 processor, so older hardware without those capabilities is not a fit. The project provides builds for Linux, macOS, Android, and Windows in 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

Who it's for

Avocado is best for technically comfortable players who already have a console BIOS, want a free emulator across desktop and Android, and value format flexibility, save options, or mouse input. It is less suited to players who need dependable compatibility, PAL audio without stutter, or support for more than two controllers. Pros and cons

Pros

Free and open-source under GPL-2.0, with builds for four platforms.
Supports five disc-image formats plus executable and audio-related file types, alongside drag-and-drop loading.
Save states, quick save and load, and one-second rewind offer several recovery options.
DualShock, digital controller, and mouse support cover different input preferences.

Cons

Early development means games may not boot or may crash soon after starting.
A BIOS from a real console is required and must be placed in a specific directory.
Only two controllers are supported, with no multitap.
PAL games may have stuttering audio because of the NTSC 60 Hz hard sync.
PAL LibCrypt games need additional .SBI or .LSD subchannel information.

Alternatives

For another free PlayStation emulator across Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows, consider DuckStation. Its Android app is free and requires a user-provided BIOS image and legally purchased, dumped games. PCSX-Redux is another free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows; it is GPL-2.0 licensed. If an iOS option matters, Gamma supports iOS and macOS and has a free version that may display ads. QuackStation, ScePSX, HopStation, and psxe are also alternatives; their published platform coverage varies.

Verdict

Choose Avocado if you want a free, open-source PS1 emulator with broad file support and useful save controls, and are prepared to provide a BIOS and tolerate uneven compatibility. Look elsewhere if reliable game support, smooth PAL audio, or more than two-player input is essential.
