Overview

Avery Design & Print is an online editor for labels and other printable Avery products. It is best for people preparing Avery print jobs who need templates, mail merge, or barcodes. Its focused toolkit is free, but its purpose is narrower than general-purpose design software.

Key features

Start with a professionally designed template or a blank one, then add images and crop, resize, and position them. Straight and curved text, font choices, and typography tools cover common label layouts. This is a useful set of controls for making Avery printables without a separate design application, though the Avery-product focus limits its appeal for broader design work.

Mail merge imports contact details and other data for variable-data printing. Supported spreadsheet formats include .xls, .xlsx, and .csv, making the feature useful for batches where changing each design individually would be tedious. The free barcode generator creates barcodes and QR codes and supports sequential numbering, a practical advantage for projects that need distinct identifiers.

Projects can be saved to a computer or online and shared through project links by email. An account is not needed to use the editor or save locally; saving to a free Avery account does require one. Google Drive supports merging Google Sheets data and importing Google Photos. Avery also names Microsoft Word and Publisher, Apple Pages, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, Pitney Bowes, and Constant Contact among its software partners.

Users can print on their own inkjet or laser printer, or have Avery WePrint professionally print and mail a project. Avery says its online tools use secured hardware and TLS and SSL to protect data in storage and transfer, and that it does not sell images or content.

Pricing

Avery Design & Print Online: 0.00 USD per free. The free plan creates designs for printable Avery products and includes barcode support, shipping labels, and variable-data printing. That makes it a strong fit for occasional or batch Avery print jobs without a software charge. The important trade-off is scope: this is a tool for Avery products, not a broader paid design suite.

Users can keep projects on their computer without an account. The online-save option requires a free Avery account, so people who want cloud saving must register. Printing can be done at home or through Avery WePrint.

Platforms

The editor is web-based, so it runs in a browser. Avery supports printing with inkjet and laser printers. The online option suits users who want to work without installing a desktop editor, while printing at home depends on having a compatible printer and Avery product.

Who it's for

Avery Design & Print fits individuals, households, and small organizations making Avery labels or other printable Avery products, especially when a job involves repeated data, addresses, or barcodes. It is less suitable for people seeking a flexible design workspace for print products beyond Avery's range.

Pros and cons

Pros: The editor is free, and users can save locally without creating an account.
Pros: Mail merge accepts .xls, .xlsx, and .csv files, reducing repetitive work on variable-data print jobs.
Pros: Barcode and QR-code generation includes sequential numbering, useful for identifier-based projects.
Cons: The editor is centered on printable Avery products, limiting its fit for general print design.
Cons: Saving online requires an Avery account, while account-free saving is limited to the user's computer.

Alternatives

For a broader design editor and content library, Canva has a free plan for one person and a free trial; choose it when those broader design resources matter more than Avery-focused print tools. Adobe Express Video is another free option, with 25 generative credits per month, 155,000+ templates, and 5 GB storage, and is a better fit when those resources are the priority.

For direct mail rather than designing Avery products, Lob Address Verification offers a free Developer plan with up to 6,000 mailings and one user. Postalytics has a free plan with unlimited campaigns, templates, and lists for one login, with mail charged per piece, so it is a better fit for campaign-based mailing.

Postable is an alternative for address books and greeting cards. MyPostcard is a paid postcard service. PRINTgenie is another freemium option. SnapShot Postcard offers postcard credits and a paid monthly membership.

Readers comparing categories can also browse Postcard Maker Software, Label Design Software, and Print Design Template Libraries.

Verdict

Choose Avery Design & Print if you need a no-cost way to prepare Avery labels or other Avery printables, particularly with mail merge or barcode generation. Its local saving without an account is convenient, while cloud saving requires registration. Look elsewhere if your work calls for a broader design canvas or print products outside Avery's range.
