Overview

Retool brings app building, data connections and workflow automation into one product, with cloud hosting or self-hosting in a customer’s own VPC. Its AI-native builder produces a working app from a description for users to refine, making it a useful starting point rather than a substitute for shaping an app to fit a real process.

Retool says queries run against customers’ data sources and that it does not store their data. It lists role-based access controls, audit logging, SSO and independent workspaces among its security capabilities. Those controls and deployment choices will matter most to teams building software around sensitive or operational business systems.

Key features

Apps, data and mobile

Connections include REST API, Google Sheets, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Firebase, GraphQL, Snowflake, Salesforce and Slack. That breadth supports tools built around existing systems instead of forcing every workflow into a separate data store. Retool supports web apps and native iOS and Android apps, as well as progressive web apps. Mobile apps can use device features including photo capture, barcode scanning, signature capture and NFC reading, which suits field work that depends on those inputs.

Automation and AI

Workflows can run on schedules or webhook triggers, with custom error handling and automatic retries. These are practical safeguards for recurring or event-driven processes, though the Team plan’s 5,000 workflow runs per month may constrain busier use. AI credits are pooled across the account, renew monthly and do not roll over; paid plans can add credit packs. AI agents are billed hourly and do not use that credit pool, so agent costs follow a separate meter.

Pricing

Retool has a free plan and a free trial. Paid pricing starts at $10/mo (annual). The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and supports up to five users, making it suitable for a small team evaluating or building a limited tool, but not a larger rollout without moving up.

Team is 10.00 USD per month, billed at $10/mo per builder and $5/mo per internal user. It raises the user ceiling beyond Free and includes 5,000 workflow runs per month, a staging resource environment, app release versions, 1,000 AI credits per month and the option to add agent hours. This is the more practical tier for teams needing deployment stages and regular automation, but both workflow runs and AI credits have defined allowances.

Business is 50.00 USD per month, billed at $50/mo per builder and $15/mo per internal user. It adds audit logging, richer permission controls, portals and embedded apps, unlimited resource environments and modules, and 3,000 AI credits per month. Teams that need those governance and embedding features may justify the higher per-user rates; smaller teams can reasonably stay on Team if its controls and quotas suffice.

Enterprise has custom pricing. Technical support from Retool’s Support Engineering team is an Enterprise feature. The published plan details make Team and Business the clearest choices for predictable user and usage allowances; confirm the terms that apply to a specific deployment before scaling.

Platforms

Retool supports web, iOS and Android, and lists API and self-hosted availability. Teams can deploy in Retool’s cloud or self-host in their own VPC, with self-hosted setup via Docker. That choice is useful where infrastructure control matters, though it puts self-hosting within the deployment decision rather than making the product a hosted-only builder.

Who it's for

Retool identifies developers, business engineers, analysts and operations teams as builders. It is a strong fit for organizations that want tailored tools connected to business data, especially when mobile inputs, workflow automation or self-hosting matter. It is less suitable for a larger team expecting to remain on a free tier, or for buyers who need generous usage without tracking quotas.

Pros and cons

Pros: Apps, mobile capabilities and workflows share connections to business data, which can support a broad range of internal processes in one platform.
Pros: Native mobile apps can use camera, barcode, signature and NFC inputs, a meaningful fit for field operations.
Pros: Cloud and VPC self-hosting, alongside listed access controls and audit logging, give teams deployment and governance options.
Cons: Free is capped at five users, so a wider team must budget for paid seats.
Cons: Team caps workflows at 5,000 runs monthly and AI credits expire at monthly renewal rather than rolling over.
Cons: Builder and internal-user rates differ, and AI agents have separate hourly billing, making total cost depend on both the team mix and usage.

Alternatives

Noloco is worth considering for teams whose priority is a free plan with unlimited team seats, 50 active clients, 2,000 records and 30 AI credits per month. UI Bakery is another freemium option with a free plan, trial and self-hosted availability. Windmill offers a free and open-source plan with self-hosted availability, which may suit teams seeking that combination.

Zoho Creator is a freemium web and mobile option with a free allowance of one user, one app, 1,000 records and 250 MB of storage. Appsmith has a free self-hosted and web plan for up to five cloud users, with workspaces, Git repos and Google SSO included. Budibase is a freemium self-hosted and web alternative with a listed Pro plan at 19.00 USD per month.

Forest Admin is an alternative for readers comparing a freemium option with a paid Starter plan at 499.00 USD per month. Glide is a web-only freemium option whose Free plan allows two team members and ten projects, but no published apps or enabled workflows.

Verdict

Choose Retool if your team needs custom apps and automation built around its existing business data, with mobile support and a choice of cloud or VPC deployment. Its breadth is the main reason to choose it; the main reason to look elsewhere is the need to manage per-role seat pricing, workflow limits and separate AI-credit and agent billing as use grows.
