Overview

AudioPen is a voice-first writing app for people who would rather speak a rough thought than type a first draft. Its strongest fit is individual note-taking that benefits from a chosen writing style; it is a poor match for recording and organizing group meetings.

The key trade-off is useful flexibility after capture against a firm boundary: AI rewriting needs an internet connection, and AudioPen does not join Zoom calls or identify speakers.

Key features

AudioPen turns spoken thoughts into clearer writing, with low, medium, and high rewrite settings and a length control. That gives users room to preserve their wording or ask for a more substantial edit. Custom styles can be described or supplied as a sample, which is more useful for recurring formats or a preferred voice than a generic rewrite setting alone.

It can write in a different language from the one spoken, and supports many languages. Voice typing puts dictation directly into text fields in apps including Gmail, Slack, Notion, and Google Docs, making it relevant beyond a standalone note workflow.

Zapier and webhooks can send saved notes to other apps. Prime's MCP lets ChatGPT or Claude read notes, but that access is read-only. Prime also supports SuperSummaries and audio and text uploads; uploads are capped at 100 files every four weeks, up to 100MB each, in common listed formats.

AudioPen says voice-note audio is deleted from its servers within 48 hours, voice-typing audio is not saved, data is encrypted at rest, and notes are not used to train AI. Those are meaningful privacy assurances for spoken drafts, though they do not change the fact that rewriting depends on internet access.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes recordings up to 3 minutes, transcription and rewriting, and limited voice-typing sessions. It is a sensible way to try the core workflow, but short recordings and capped voice typing make it a constrained choice for regular use.

Prime is sold in three terms: 33.00 USD per once, billed 3 months; 99.00 USD per once, billed 1 year; or 159.00 USD per once, billed 2 years. Each includes unlimited recordings up to 15 minutes, unlimited voice typing and AI rewrites, unlimited note storage, audio and text uploads, SuperSummaries, and AudioPen MCP. The longer terms lower the price over the covered period, but require a larger upfront payment; each recording still has a 15-minute ceiling. The site also offers up to 100 one-year Prime licenses in one order at a 20% discount for teams and groups.

Platforms

AudioPen is available on Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, the web, and as an extension. Its iPhone, Android, Mac, and Windows apps can transcribe on-device offline, but rewriting waits for an internet connection. That makes it more resilient for capturing speech away from a connection than for completing the full speech-to-writing process offline.

Who it's for

Writers, creators, salespeople, lawyers, therapists, and anyone who finds typing slow or painful are among AudioPen's intended users. It makes most sense for people who want spoken notes turned into shaped prose, or who need dictation inside other apps. People seeking speaker-labelled transcripts or a tool that joins online meetings should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Adjustable rewrite intensity, length, and custom styles provide more control over the final text than transcription alone.
Pros: Offline on-device transcription on major phone and desktop apps keeps capture available without a connection.
Pros: Voice typing and integrations support both direct dictation and routing saved notes into other tools.
Cons: AI rewriting requires internet access, so offline capture does not mean an offline finished note.
Cons: No Zoom joining or speaker labels rules it out for meeting documentation.
Cons: Free recordings stop at 3 minutes and voice typing is limited; Prime raises the recording limit to 15 minutes, not beyond.

Alternatives

Letterly is another freemium option with a free trial and Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows support; consider it if you want to compare a separate voice-to-writing app.

Snow offers a Pro plan at 8.00 USD per month with voice captures, AI summaries, tags, connections, search, and sync; choose it when organizing and finding captured notes is the priority.

Voicenotes has a free Basic tier with 100 weekly transcription minutes, 30-day history, unlimited recordings, and 100+ languages, making it worth considering if those free-tier allowances matter more than AudioPen's rewrite controls.

Audionotes offers a free tier with unlimited one-minute voice notes, text notes, transcripts, summaries, and 99+ languages; it may suit very short captures.

VoiceJournal is a freemium option with Android, iOS, and web support and a free tier capped at 10 notes and two minutes per recording.

Cleft is limited to iOS and macOS, with a free tier that includes five-minute recordings, three built-in styles, on-device transcription, tags, search, and export; it is a closer fit for Apple users who want those capture and organization tools.

Memex is free to download on Android and iOS, though AI features require a configured model service that may incur provider charges.

Memoth is another freemium option for extension, iOS, and macOS.

Verdict

Choose AudioPen if you want to speak individual thoughts, shape the rewrite, and dictate into other apps without starting from a keyboard. Its controls and broad platform reach make it a capable fit for that focused job; look elsewhere for meeting capture, speaker labels, or fully offline rewriting.
