Overview

Flat brings notation, playback, tablature, and parts extraction into a service that runs on web, desktop, and mobile. Its strongest case is for people who need to share and edit scores in real time; solo composers who do not need collaboration may find that advantage less compelling.

Key features

Multiple users can write, edit, and comment on the same score in real time from different devices. That makes Flat useful for shared arranging and classroom work, while Basic’s 15-score limit may be restrictive for users building a large or ongoing library.

Flat supports MusicXML and MIDI import and export. Desktop users can also export PDF, MP3, and WAV, but importing PDF scores requires Power or paid credits. That is a notable trade-off for musicians whose starting point is an existing PDF rather than a score they can bring in through MusicXML or MIDI.

Basic includes 30 instruments; Power expands that to more than 180, including HQ studio instruments, and adds custom instruments, customizable layouts and notation, and advanced playback. Composing, editing, and playback work offline, but cloud sync requires Power. Offline use is therefore possible without a subscription, while keeping work synchronized across devices is a paid-plan benefit.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Flat Basic	Free	Core notation features, playback, real-time collaboration, MIDI device transcription, 30 instruments, and up to 15 scores. Includes MusicXML and MIDI import, plus export and printing with Flat branding.
Flat Desktop Free	Free	Free desktop app with up to 15 scores.
Flat Power Monthly	$9.99 per month	Unlimited scores, more than 180 instruments including HQ instruments, MusicXML and MIDI import and export, custom instruments, customizable layouts and notation, and advanced playback. Power also includes cloud sync and priority support.
Flat Power Yearly	$49.99 per year	Yearly Power subscription with the same stated Power features; Flat states a 58% saving.
Flat Power Lifetime	Custom pricing	Lifetime option with premium Power features.
Flat for Education	Custom pricing	Free one-month trial; integrates with Google for Education, Microsoft Office 365, and Canvas.

Basic is a sensible starting point for smaller score collections, with the trade-off of branded exports and a firm score ceiling. Power is the fit for people who need unlimited scores, expanded instrument options, PDF import, or cloud sync. The yearly subscription costs less than paying the monthly rate for a full year; the Education trial gives schools a month to evaluate the offering before committing.

Platforms

Flat is available on web, iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows. The desktop app is free to download and use, and composing, editing, and playback work offline. Users who need cloud sync must choose Power.

Who it's for

Flat suits composers and arrangers collaborating across devices, as well as educators who want real-time score work and integrations with major education platforms. It is less suited to a free-only user who expects to keep more than 15 scores, or to someone who relies on PDF import but does not want to pay for Power or credits.

Pros and cons

Pros: Real-time writing, editing, and commenting support shared work from different devices.
Pros: MusicXML and MIDI import and export, plus desktop PDF, MP3, and WAV export, give users several ways to move scores and recordings between workflows.
Pros: Offline composing, editing, and playback make the desktop and mobile offering useful without continuous connectivity.
Cons: Basic stops at 15 scores and applies Flat branding to export and print.
Cons: Cloud sync and PDF import require Power or paid credits, reducing the appeal for users who want an entirely free, synchronized workflow.

Verdict

Choose Flat if you want notation and playback alongside real-time collaboration across web, desktop, and mobile, especially for shared arranging or education. Look elsewhere if you need a free library larger than 15 scores, cloud sync without Power, or PDF import without paying for Power or credits.
