Overview

Atlas is a schema-management and migration tool for teams that want database changes driven by a declared target rather than a hand-built sequence alone. It is strongest for engineering teams that need schema changes to fit into CI/CD and be checked before execution; the free core has meaningful limits in database coverage and inspection.

Key features

Plan changes from the desired schema

Atlas compares a database’s current structure with a target described in HCL, SQL, or an ORM schema, then generates and can execute a migration plan. That approach gives teams a consistent way to reason about intended state and schema diffs. Rollback support adds an option for reversing changes, while mixed migration formats leave room to use different schema representations.

Checks and automation

Migration linting, validation, safety checks, and schema and migration testing make Atlas a better fit for teams that want to catch risky changes before deployment than for users seeking only a basic migration runner. CI/CD automation and drift detection extend that work into ongoing deployment and monitoring workflows.

Integrations and database coverage

Atlas integrates with Kubernetes, Terraform, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI, Bitbucket Pipelines, and Azure DevOps, and offers a Go SDK. The open version supports PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, TiDB, and LibSQL. Pro adds drivers including SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake, and Databricks, making plan choice consequential for teams working with those systems.

The core engine is open source under Apache 2.0; advanced features are proprietary. Atlas Cloud is described as providing multi-availability-zone replication, automated failover, daily encrypted backups, and 99.9% uptime. Ariga says it has undergone SOC 2 Type II audits since 2022 and that Atlas handles database information schema and metadata rather than customer database records.

Pricing

Free core

Atlas Starter is 0.00 USD per free. It includes limited inspection and diffing and limited database support, with MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and SQLite named for the plan. That is a practical entry point for smaller projects on those databases, but it does not match the broader open-version support described for Atlas as a whole, and advanced capabilities sit in proprietary plans.

Pro for teams

Atlas Pro (Team) is 9.00 USD per month, billed at $9 per developer, per month, plus usage based pricing for CI/CD pipelines and databases. It includes 50 CLI seats, 90-day history retention, and up to 500 root objects in Atlas Registry; columns, indexes, foreign keys, and comments do not count toward that object limit. CI/CD projects cost $59/month including 2 target databases, with each additional target database at $39/month. The added drivers and team-oriented limits suit organizations standardizing migrations across more databases, but variable pipeline and database charges warrant estimating usage before committing.

New users can try Pro free for 30 days; a license is required to continue using Pro afterward. GitHub and Discord support are listed for Starter, while Pro includes business-hours support.

Monitoring and enterprise

Atlas Schema Monitoring is 39.00 USD per month, billed $39/month per monitored databases. It includes a schema changelog, ERD and schema documentation, column-level data lineage, a Security Graph with CVE scanning, and drift detection with alerts. It fits teams that need ongoing visibility across monitored databases, but its per-database charge makes the monitored estate central to the cost.

Atlas Enterprise uses custom pricing, starts from 20 databases, and offers customizable plans, Enterprise SSO, premium support with a custom SLA, air-gapped deployment, and offline CI/CD licenses. It is aimed at larger or constrained environments; smaller teams are better served by Starter or Pro.

Platforms

Atlas supports API, Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted deployment. The self-hosted option suits teams that need to run the tool within their own environment; Atlas Cloud is an alternative with the stated availability and backup provisions.

Who it's for

Atlas suits teams from startups to large enterprises that manage database schemas through repeatable migration workflows, especially those seeking validation and CI/CD integration. Ariga identifies customers across financial services, healthcare, cybersecurity, e-commerce, manufacturing, education, government, and cloud vendors. Teams should check that their required database drivers and deployment model fit the plan before adopting it.

Pros and cons

Pros: Declarative planning, migration checks, rollback, and drift detection cover important stages from schema design through ongoing change control.
Pros: Broad CI/CD integrations and self-hosting support make it adaptable to established engineering environments.
Cons: Starter has limited inspection and database support, and Pro is required for additional drivers such as SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake, and Databricks.
Cons: Pro’s per-developer fee is supplemented by usage-based charges, project costs, and additional target-database fees.

Alternatives

For adjacent data-lineage options, compare Data Lineage Tools. For other migration-focused products, browse Database Migration Tools; teams emphasizing validation and testing can also consult Database Testing Tools.

Coalesce Catalog may suit a user seeking a data catalog with a free one-user Developer plan, Transform and Quality, and a capped 2,000 monthly actions. Databricks Notebooks is an alternative for users who want a free, web-based serverless workspace with limited compute and usage. Grai is a free alternative described as fully open source and self-hosted, for users who prioritize control of their data and hosting environment. Collate may fit users looking for an open-source OpenMetadata core alongside a separately licensed UI and connectors. Dremio offers a forever-free Standard tier with three projects, though customer cloud infrastructure costs may still apply. Spline and SQLLineage are free alternatives. Cloudera Data Lake Service is a paid option for readers considering a data lake service instead.

Verdict

Choose Atlas if your team wants schema-first migration planning backed by validation, safety checks, and CI/CD automation, with a free core for supported databases. Look elsewhere if your required drivers fall outside Starter’s coverage or if usage-based Pro charges make your deployment hard to budget.
