Overview

Atari800 is an emulator for Atari 8-bit computers and the Atari 5200, aimed at people who want to run software across several generations of Atari hardware. Its breadth of system, media, and controller support makes it a strong free option, provided you can meet its BIOS requirement.

Key features

Atari800 covers the Atari 400 and 800, the XL and XE families, XE Game System, and 5200 SuperSystem. Cycle-exact emulation for the 6502, NMI, POKEY, ANTIC, and GTIA gives users a broad set of core Atari components to work with. That range suits people moving among different Atari software and systems better than a tool focused on a single console.

It handles ATR, XFD, DCM, ATR.GZ, and XFD.GZ disk images, with up to eight emulated drives. It can also load Atari executables and BASIC programs, emulate cassette tapes, and save files to the host through the H: device. This makes it useful for more than launching games from disk, though the BIOS requirement is a material setup dependency.

Controller options include real joysticks and emulated paddles, light pens, light guns, mice, trackballs, and other controllers. Save states and controller remapping add flexibility for different software and input setups. Screen snapshots can be saved as PCX or PNG, and sound output as WAV. NetSIO and FujiNet support network SIO over UDP with configurable ports.

Pricing

Atari800 has one plan: Atari800 costs 0.00 USD per free. It is freely distributable, with source code available under GPL version 2. There is no paid tier or free trial to weigh; the practical trade-off is that users must account for the BIOS requirement. The license and available source suit users who value open-source software, while those seeking a bundled, paid support arrangement should look elsewhere.

Platforms

Atari800 supports Linux, Windows, macOS, and Android. Source code and binary packages are available through GitHub releases, with Linux packages also covered by Debian and Fedora instructions. The GitHub releases page lists version 7.2.1, dated 2026/09/13, as fixing build errors. Its C implementation and GPL version 2 license will matter to users evaluating source availability and redistribution. The project directs questions, bug reports, and discussions to its user mailing list, and accepts bug reports and pull requests through GitHub Issues. It makes no security certification or compliance claims.

Who it's for

Atari800 is best for users who want a single free emulator spanning Atari 8-bit computers and the 5200, especially if they need several disk-image formats, multiple drives, non-disk media, or varied controller support. It is a less suitable choice for anyone who cannot meet the BIOS requirement or wants an Atari 2600-focused emulator.

Pros and cons

Pros

Wide coverage of Atari computer models and the 5200, paired with cycle-exact emulation of several core components.
Disk, executable, BASIC, and cassette support, plus host file saving, cover varied software workflows.
Multiple controller types, remapping, save states, image snapshots, and WAV output offer useful flexibility.
Free distribution with source code under GPL version 2.

Cons

A BIOS is required, adding a prerequisite before use.
Its breadth will not be an advantage for users who only need a narrower Atari console emulator.

Alternatives

For another Atari emulator, kat5200 is a free alternative for Atari 5200 and 8-bit computer emulation. Choose Altirra if a Windows-only option meets your needs; it is free under GPL version 2 and supports Windows 7 or later on x86/x64 or ARM64. Virtual Jaguar is a free open-source emulator core for users who can supply a libretro frontend such as RetroArch. For Atari 2600 emulation, Javatari offers online access, while Stella focuses on Atari 2600 VCS emulation and accepts voluntary donations. BigPEmu offers a free emulator download with Windows x64/ARM64 and Linux x64/ARM64 builds. Teller is an unrelated open-source universal secret manager for developers, not an Atari emulator. Gearlynx is another free alternative.

Verdict

Choose Atari800 if you want free, broad Atari 8-bit computer and 5200 emulation with substantial disk, file, and controller support. Its main drawback is the required BIOS, so users who cannot meet that prerequisite—or only want a more focused Atari emulator—should consider an alternative.
