Overview

ArgyllCMS is an open-source system for creating ICC profiles and calibrating devices. It covers scanners, cameras, film recorders, displays, and RGB, CMY, or CMYK printers, making it relevant to production workflows that span capture, display, and print. Its code development began in 1995, and the first public release followed in 2000.

Rather than presenting these capabilities in a self-contained desktop app, ArgyllCMS provides command-line tools. That structure offers a broad technical toolkit, but users who want a guided graphical workflow will need a separate front end. The project identifies DisplayCAL, The Little Argyll GUI, and CoCa as options that use ArgyllCMS.

ArgyllCMS fits both Display Calibration Software and Color Management Software; its reach extends beyond display work alone.

Key features

Profiles for varied devices

Support for scanners, cameras, film recorders, displays, and RGB, CMY, and CMYK printers gives ArgyllCMS unusually broad scope for users managing color across different kinds of equipment. It can also create device-link profiles, including options for video calibration standards and 3D LUTs. ICC profile export, LUT calibration, multi-monitor calibration, and HDR calibration are supported capabilities.

Spectral measurement and conversion

Users can work with spectral sample data, select illuminants and observer types, and compensate for paper fluorescent whiteners. Those controls matter in workflows where the measurement conditions and paper characteristics are part of the profiling task. The package includes raster color-conversion tools for 8-bit data and fully accurate conversion tools for 16-bit data, a useful distinction for workflows that need greater precision.

Instrument and chart compatibility

Direct instrument support includes devices from JETI, Klein, X-Rite and Calibrite, DataColor, and other manufacturers. Tools can also convert some Colorblind, Kodak Colorflow, Gretag, Logo, X-Rite, and Barbieri chart results into Argyll CGATS format. This breadth can help users bring measurement equipment and chart results into one toolset, though the supported chart-result conversion is specific rather than universal.

Documentation and support

Documentation covers each major tool as well as common color-management tasks. The mailing list serves as the main support channel and also handles bug reports and release announcements. That is a practical resource for a command-line package, but it is a community mailing list rather than a built-in guided support experience.

Pricing

ArgyllCMS: 0.00 USD per free. The free plan provides open-source AGPLv3 software and command-line tools, with no free trial. It is the straightforward choice for users whose work can use the AGPLv3 license. Commercial and non-GPL use requires a separate license, so businesses or developers with incompatible licensing needs should account for that condition; commercial licensing is available through ArgyllPRO for code copyrighted by Graeme Gill.

Platforms

ArgyllCMS runs on Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, and Linux. Linux users seeking native display calibration and profiling should note that Wayland is not currently supported for this work; the maker recommends X11 for color-managed Linux displays.

Who it's for

ArgyllCMS is best suited to color-management practitioners, imaging professionals, and technically confident users who need detailed device profiling, spectral controls, or conversion across an image and print workflow. Its range of supported devices and instruments makes it a strong fit when display calibration is only one part of the job.

It is a weaker fit for someone who expects a polished, self-contained graphical app or needs native display calibration under Wayland. A compatible graphical front end may make the tools more approachable, but the underlying package remains command-line software.

Pros and cons

Broad device coverage: Profiles scanners, cameras, film recorders, displays, and RGB, CMY, and CMYK printers, supporting workflows beyond monitor calibration.
Advanced profiling options: Device-link profiles, spectral data controls, fluorescent-whitener compensation, and 16-bit conversion address specialized color-management needs.
Wide instrument and chart support: Direct support for multiple measurement-instrument makers and conversion from selected chart-result formats can reduce compatibility barriers.
No built-in GUI: Command-line operation is a substantial obstacle for users who want an integrated visual workflow.
Wayland constraint on Linux: Native display calibration and profiling require an X11-based workflow according to the maker's guidance.
License conditions: Commercial and non-GPL use needs a separate license, which can rule out the free terms for some organizations and projects.

Alternatives

DisplayCAL is a relevant alternative for readers seeking another free, cross-platform option; it is free software under GNU GPL version 3 or later, with optional financial contributions, and is also named as a GUI front end that uses ArgyllCMS.

EIZO ColorNavigator 7 may suit readers using compatible EIZO ColorEdge monitors who want a free download; its compatibility is tied to those monitors.

QUBYX OS Tools is another free, cross-platform option, with software described as GNU-licensed and auditable, inspectable, and adaptable by users.

PatternSpace is a macOS-only alternative with a free tier that includes over 100 patterns, 14 SDR reference presets, and up to 25 Remote patches per session; its Pro plan costs 39.99 USD per once.

PsyCalibrator is another free option for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Gloam is a free option for Windows users.

Buddi and Microsoft Quick Assist are also listed among the alternatives.

Verdict

Choose ArgyllCMS if you need a free, technically broad toolkit for profiling varied devices and controlling color conversion, and are comfortable with command-line tools and its licensing terms. Look elsewhere if you need a built-in GUI or native Linux display profiling under Wayland.
