Overview

Argo CD is a declarative delivery tool that uses Git to manage application deployments to Kubernetes. It is best suited to platform teams overseeing deployments for multiple developer teams. Its strongest case is a clear view of whether clusters match the intended state; its trade-off is that teams must run and maintain the system themselves.

Key features

Git serves as the source of truth for desired application state, and Argo CD compares that state with what is running. Teams can inspect differences and choose automatic or manual synchronization. That visibility and control suit workflows where deployments should be traceable to repository changes; teams seeking a delivery tool without a Kubernetes focus should look elsewhere.

It supports Kustomize, Helm, Jsonnet, YAML and JSON manifests, as well as configured custom configuration management tools. It can deploy across multiple clusters, with approval gates and rollback support. A web interface shows application activity in real time, while the CLI supports automation and CI integration. Access tokens, audit trails and Prometheus metrics add operational visibility.

Multi-tenancy and role-based access control support shared use across teams. SSO integrations include OIDC, OAuth2, LDAP, SAML 2.0, GitHub, GitLab, Microsoft and LinkedIn. Local accounts lack features such as groups and login history, so organizations needing those controls should use SSO. The project says it has undergone internal security reviews and penetration testing to satisfy PCI compliance requirements.

Pricing

Argo CD costs 0.00 USD per free. The open-source plan provides declarative GitOps delivery for Kubernetes as a self-managed installation, with no paid tier described. That makes it a practical fit for teams able to operate their own deployment tooling; there is no hosted option in this plan to avoid the maintenance burden.

Platforms

Argo CD supports API, Linux, macOS, Windows, web and self-hosted use. Its deployment targets are Kubernetes clusters, so platform coverage should not be mistaken for support for deploying to non-Kubernetes targets.

Who it's for

The common multi-tenant setup is typically used by multiple application developer teams and maintained by a platform team. It fits organizations that want Git-centered control over Kubernetes state and can staff that operational responsibility. The non-high-availability installation is not recommended for production, making the installation choice consequential for teams running critical workloads.

Community channels include GitHub Discussions, the #argo-cd Slack channel, contributor office hours and a user community meeting. The CNCF lists Argo as a graduated project, with graduated maturity dating to December 6, 2022.

Pros and cons

Pro: Comparing live and desired state makes drift visible and gives teams a choice between automatic and manual synchronization.
Pro: Multiple clusters, several configuration formats, and a CLI support varied Kubernetes delivery workflows.
Pro: Multi-tenancy, RBAC, SSO integrations and audit trails support shared, accountable operations.
Con: The self-managed model requires a team to maintain the delivery system.
Con: Local accounts lack groups and login history, so advanced account needs require SSO.
Con: The non-high-availability installation is not recommended for production use.

Alternatives

For other open-source Kubernetes delivery projects, compare Flux CD, which requires a Kubernetes cluster, or KubeVela, a self-hosted Kubernetes control plane under Apache-2.0. PipeCD is another free, open-source option under Apache 2.0.

Teams comparing broader deployment and infrastructure tools can consider Nullstone, whose free Individual plan is limited to 1 user, 1 environment and 10 deploys per week on AWS or GCP, or Pulumi, whose Free plan includes unlimited projects, stacks, environments, updates and history for 1 user, with workflow-minute limits. GitLab Package Registry has a free plan capped at 5 users per top-level group, 400 compute minutes monthly and 10 GiB of adjustable storage; it is a package registry rather than a direct substitute for Argo CD's Kubernetes deployment workflow.

Portainer offers a free Business Edition tier for up to 3 nodes, with full features and no time limit. Devtron Release Orchestration has a free tier for up to 50 vCPUs, 10 users and 1 cluster. These are options to compare when their stated node or cluster limits suit the deployment footprint.

Verdict

Choose Argo CD if your team wants Git to govern Kubernetes deployments and values drift visibility, multi-cluster support and flexible synchronization. Its free, self-managed model is compelling for platform teams equipped to operate it. Look elsewhere if you need a hosted service or cannot support the production installation and account controls your organization requires.
