Overview

AppStatus brings uptime checks, infrastructure telemetry, alert routing, incident response and status pages together for teams that want one operational view across services and hosts. It is best suited to small and growing engineering teams managing both monitoring and customer communications; its free tier makes it possible to begin modestly, but API access starts at Pro.

The breadth is its strongest case: checks, host data, Kubernetes monitoring and status-page updates sit alongside incident analysis. The trade-off is that the free and entry tiers impose meaningful caps, so larger or API-dependent teams will need to budget for an upgrade.

Key features

Uptime monitoring covers HTTP, API, port and ping checks from 70 global regions, with SSL tracking and heartbeat monitoring. That gives teams several ways to watch both public endpoints and jobs that should report in. Kubernetes monitoring reaches clusters, pods, nodes and deployments, making AppStatus more than a basic uptime checker.

The Linux, macOS and Windows host agent collects system and process metrics, logs, security events, container statistics, file-integrity changes, HTTP probe results and active sessions. It also runs on Docker, Kubernetes and cloud virtual machines. This breadth can consolidate host-level signals, though teams should weigh the amount of telemetry they need against the plan's agent limits.

Alerting supports 12 channel types, including Slack, Discord, Microsoft Teams, PagerDuty, Opsgenie, Telegram, WhatsApp, email, SMS, Pushover, GitHub and webhooks. Condition-based rules, escalation policies, quiet hours and on-call rotation give teams room to route alerts by urgency and schedule. Read-only integrations cover AWS, Azure, GCP, databases, queues, runtimes and platform services, a useful boundary for teams that want cloud visibility without granting write access.

AI incident analysis suggests probable causes from recent changes, alert patterns and incident history. It can help narrow an investigation, but teams still need to verify the cause. Security controls include Google OAuth, TOTP two-factor authentication, scoped API keys, four workspace roles, 13 granular permissions and audit logging. AppStatus says passwords are hashed with Argon2id, traffic uses TLS, and agent-to-server gRPC uses mutual TLS.

Status pages offer custom domains and branding, password-protected private pages, email subscribers and maintenance scheduling. The REST API, for monitoring data, alert management and custom integrations, is available only on Pro and above—an important restriction for teams building workflows around programmatic access.

Pricing

AppStatus has a free plan, paid plans billed annually, and a 14-day trial. The Free tier includes 5 monitors with 5-minute checks, 3 heartbeats, 1 status page, 1 agent, 5 team members, 1 workspace, 1 Kubernetes cluster, 30 days of retention and 15 notifications per day, with email alerts. It is a useful starting point for a small setup, but the monitor, team and daily notification ceilings leave little room for a growing operation.

Starter costs 6.00 USD per month (billed annually) and raises capacity to 50 monitors, 10 status pages, 10 agents, 15 team members, 3 workspaces and 365 days of retention. It is a substantial step up for a small team, though it does not include custom domains or API access.

Pro costs 15.00 USD per month (billed annually), with 200 monitors, 50 status pages, 25 agents, 25 team members, 5 workspaces and custom domains. It is the entry point for teams that need the REST API or branded domains. Business costs 39.00 USD per month (billed annually) and provides 500 monitors, 100 status pages, 75 agents, unlimited team members, custom domains and custom webhooks; it suits larger operations that need more headroom and flexible alert integrations.

Enterprise costs 119.00 USD per month (billed annually) and includes unlimited monitors, status pages, agents and team members, plus custom integrations and a dedicated CSM. It is aimed at organizations that need scale and a named customer contact. Free and Starter support typically responds within 24 hours on weekdays; Pro and Business within 8 hours; Enterprise has a 1-hour SLA.

Platforms

AppStatus is available across API, Linux, macOS, web and Windows. Its agent also supports Docker, Kubernetes and cloud virtual machines, giving teams several deployment environments for host telemetry.

Who it's for

AppStatus makes the most sense for teams that want monitoring, alert escalation, incident context and customer-facing status communication under one roof. Small teams can use Free to evaluate a constrained setup; Starter is a practical fit as monitor, retention and team needs expand. Pro is the sensible threshold for API access and custom domains. Teams seeking only a simple status page, or those needing API access without moving beyond Starter, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: Monitoring spans 70 regions, common endpoint types, Kubernetes and rich host telemetry, so teams can cover application and infrastructure signals together.
Pro: Twelve alert channel types plus escalation, quiet hours and on-call rotation support more controlled response than email-only alerting.
Pro: Private pages, custom branding, subscribers and maintenance scheduling connect incident handling with customer updates.
Con: Free is capped at five monitors, one status page and 15 notifications per day, which can constrain even a modest production setup.
Con: API access and custom domains require Pro or above, so Starter users give up two capabilities that can matter for integration and branding.
Con: The quoted paid prices are billed annually, a commitment to consider when moving beyond the free tier.

Alternatives

Status Page Software is the category directory for comparing status-page tools. Among individual options, openstatus is worth considering if self-hosting matters; its free Hobby plan has one monitor, one status page, three components and 10-minute minimum checks, a narrower starting point than AppStatus's free monitoring allowance.

StatusIQ may suit teams prioritizing mobile access, since it supports Android and iOS as well as web and API. Spectate is an alternative with Android and iOS apps, for teams that value mobile platforms. Instatus offers a free Starter plan with 15 monitors, 2-minute checks, email alerts, five team members, two on-call members and a public status page; it may fit teams focused on those status and on-call basics.

StatusEntry is another freemium status-page option for teams comparing page-focused tools. StatusPage.me offers a free plan with one status page, three monitors per page, 30 days of uptime history and email notifications, a fit for a small status-page setup. Flashduty Status Page has a free tier for five users with one public status page and collaboration, which may suit a small group focused on shared status-page work. Freshstatus is a free web-based option for readers comparing free status-page products.

Verdict

Choose AppStatus if your team wants uptime and host monitoring, alert routing, incident analysis and status pages in one platform, with a free tier to start and higher caps as needs grow. Its main limitation is the plan boundary: API access and custom domains start at Pro, while Free has a tight notification and monitor budget. For teams that need those capabilities from the outset, or only want a simpler status-page service, another option may be a better fit.
