Overview

Tracetest lets teams test more than a service’s response: assertions can cover trace data, span timing, and side effects elsewhere in a distributed system. That wider view is valuable when a request succeeds but the path it took or the work it triggered also needs to be checked.

Teams can attach it to existing Cypress, k6, Playwright, and Postman tests, or trigger tests with HTTP, gRPC, and Kafka. CLI runs fit into CI/CD pipelines, and YAML definitions can be kept in source control. The major constraint is where it can run: Tracetest Core is documented as a Docker container for local environments, not production. Kubeshop discontinued the commercial Cloud and Enterprise offerings in October 2024; the open-source version remains available.

Key features

Trace-level assertions: Check responses, trace contents, span timing, and distributed-system side effects together. This suits integration and end-to-end coverage across microservices better than tests focused only on endpoint output.
Existing tests and triggers: Reuse Cypress, k6, Playwright, or Postman tests, or start checks through HTTP, gRPC, and Kafka. This gives teams multiple ways to add trace validation without making every test begin from the same trigger.
Trace inspection: Tracetest renders traces and can flag instrumentation problems, missing attributes, naming conventions, and possible exposure of sensitive data, including passwords and API keys. That makes it useful for teams checking both test behavior and trace quality.
CI/CD and scheduled checks: The CLI runs tests in CI/CD, with YAML definitions suitable for source control. Tests and suites can also run as scheduled synthetic monitors and send alerts through webhooks, extending checks beyond deployment pipelines.
Integrations: The integrations include Datadog, Grafana Tempo, Jaeger, Honeycomb, Cypress, Playwright, GitHub Actions, and k6, which helps teams fit trace-based testing into existing observability and test workflows.

Pricing

Tracetest Open Source: 0.00 USD per free. The open-source edition remains available, with OpenTelemetry support and a self-hosted deployment model. It is the fit for teams that can operate the tool themselves and do not need the discontinued commercial Cloud or Enterprise offerings. There is no free trial; the free plan is the open-source product itself.

The practical cost is operational rather than a listed subscription: Tracetest Core is documented for local use and is not suitable for production. Teams seeking a commercially supported production service should look elsewhere.

Platforms

Tracetest supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows. CLI installation instructions cover Mac, Linux, and Windows, and the download page provides a server installation command. The self-hosted option aligns with the open-source model, but Core’s local-environment limitation matters for production deployments.

Who it's for

Tracetest is aimed at developers and QA engineers working on microservice-based distributed systems, including projects built with Go, Rust, Node.js, and Python. It is a strong match for teams already using OpenTelemetry that need tests to inspect traces as well as application outcomes. Documentation and Slack are support channels, and users can also arrange a getting-started meeting with founder Ken Hamric.

Pros and cons

Pro — tests the path, not just the result: Assertions can cover traces, timing, and downstream side effects alongside responses, giving distributed-system teams broader checks across service boundaries.
Pro — fits existing workflows: Existing test frameworks, CI/CD execution, YAML definitions, and scheduled monitors give teams several ways to incorporate trace checks.
Pro — free and open source: The open-source version remains available for teams able to self-host and manage it.
Con — Core is not a production deployment: Its documented local-use limitation rules it out as a straightforward production-hosted testing service.
Con — commercial Cloud and Enterprise ended: Teams needing those commercial offerings cannot choose them, which narrows the fit for organizations seeking a supported managed option.

Alternatives

Distributed Tracing Tools is a useful starting point for comparing tools in the category.

AWS X-Ray is worth considering when a usage-priced option is preferable: its free allowance includes 100,000 recorded traces and the first 1,000,000 retrieved or scanned traces per month, with additional usage billed.
Grafana Cloud Application Observability may suit teams looking for hosted observability plans, with an always-free tier of 2,232 host hours and a Pro plan priced at 0.03 USD per month.
Uptrace is another freemium option, with a trial and a cloud plan that includes 50 GB free per month, then charges $0.075/GB.
Apache SkyWalking is a free, self-hosted open-source observability platform for teams seeking that deployment model.
Honeycomb offers a free tier with up to 20M events per month, up to 100M metrics data points per month, and two triggers; it is an alternative for teams comparing event and metrics allowances.
Hubble is a free open-source observability layer that requires Cilium to be installed.
Jaeger is a 100% open-source, cloud-native option with self-hosted deployment.
Oracle Log Analytics is an alternative in the log analytics category.

Verdict

Choose Tracetest if your team builds distributed systems, already uses OpenTelemetry, and wants free, self-hosted tests that assert on trace behavior as well as results. Its integration with existing tests and CI/CD is the central reason to adopt it. Look elsewhere if you need a production-ready deployment of Core or the commercial Cloud and Enterprise services that Kubeshop discontinued.
