Overview

Apple Screen Time is a built-in parental-control feature for managing children’s device use. It is best suited to families already using Apple devices who want time limits and access controls without a separate subscription. Its breadth is compelling at no cost, but family management depends on Apple’s account setup and compatible software.

Key features

Downtime can block apps and notifications at chosen times, while App Limits restrict time on apps, websites, or categories. Separate weekday and weekend routines help parents set different expectations for school days and days off. Daily Time Allowances add budgets for categories such as entertainment, games, and social media, with age-tailored guidance. The variety gives parents flexibility, though it also means choosing and maintaining a structure that fits the child.

Parents can allow or block specific apps and websites, and Ask to Browse provides a way for a child to request approval for a website. Communication controls cover Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, including approval before new contacts can connect. Age ratings govern content, and parents can restrict changes to settings such as location and Bluetooth sharing. These controls make Screen Time more than a timer; it suits parents who want to manage access and communication as well as usage.

Communication Safety blurs detected nudity in shared photos and videos in supported apps and offers children a way to get help. Apple says usage data and configuration shared between parent and child devices are end-to-end encrypted and not readable by Apple. Family members use individual Apple Accounts, while the organizer controls which purchases, files, and other data are shared.

Managing a child through a family group requires Family Sharing and an Apple Account for each member. The redesigned parental controls require version 27 or later across the family group; some controls are available on watchOS 27. Those requirements are important to check before relying on the redesigned controls. Screen Time is managed alongside Family Sharing, and Ask to Buy is a related control for purchase requests.

Pricing

Screen Time is free: the listed plan is free and is built into Apple devices. There is no free trial because no paid plan is required. The tradeoff is platform reach: Screen Time is listed for iOS and macOS, so families seeking controls across other platforms should consider an alternative.

Platforms

Screen Time is available on iOS and macOS. Some controls are available on watchOS 27, while the redesigned parental controls require version 27 or later across the family group.

Who it's for

Choose Screen Time if your family uses Apple devices and wants schedules, category budgets, web restrictions, communication controls, and content limits without paying for a separate service. Look elsewhere if family members need a solution spanning Android or Windows, or if your setup cannot meet the Family Sharing and version requirements.

Pros and cons

Pros: The built-in feature is free, with no trial or subscription required.
Pros: Controls cover schedules, app and web limits, contacts, content ratings, and certain device-setting changes, rather than screen time alone.

Cons: Managing a child through a family group requires Family Sharing and individual Apple Accounts.
Cons: The redesigned controls require version 27 or later across the family group, and the listed platform coverage is limited to iOS and macOS.

Verdict

Apple Screen Time is a strong choice for families already within Apple’s ecosystem who want broad parental controls at no extra cost. Its main reasons to choose it are the combination of schedules, limits, communication controls, and content settings, plus Apple’s stated end-to-end encryption for shared usage and configuration data. Look elsewhere if you need broader platform coverage or cannot meet the family-group and version requirements.
