Overview

Hive separates storage from compute and supports data lake storage, including S3, Azure Data Lake, and Google Cloud Storage. That combination suits organizations that want SQL access to large datasets without tying the data to one storage system. Its distributed, fault-tolerant design and shared catalog are strengths; the Java, Hadoop, and Tez requirements make it a more involved choice than a self-contained database.

The project is maintained by Apache Software Foundation volunteers and has mailing lists and community channels for participation. Teams comfortable relying on an open-source community may value that model; organizations requiring a different support arrangement should weigh that before adopting it.

Key features

SQL access and shared metadata

HiveServer2 supports concurrent clients and JDBC and ODBC connections, giving client applications familiar ways to query Hive. Hive Metastore centralizes table and partition metadata and serves Hive, Impala, and Spark. That shared catalog is valuable when several engines need a common view of data.

Transactions and storage

Hive offers full ACID transactions for ORC tables and insert-only transactions for other formats. Teams using non-ORC formats therefore get a narrower transaction model, a meaningful trade-off when updates and consistency matter. Hive also supports Apache Iceberg tables through its StorageHandler.

Integrations and security

The project names Spark, Presto, and Impala as integrations, and describes Apache Ranger for authorization and Apache Atlas for lineage and governance. Security options include Kerberos authentication, fine-grained access control, and audit logging; HiveServer2 also documents LDAP, PAM, and custom authentication. This range suits deployments that need to fit Hive into an existing data and access-control environment.

Deployment and compatibility

The official quickstart provides Docker instructions for running HiveServer2 and the Metastore in a container. The installation manual identifies Linux as common for production and Mac as common for development. Prerequisites vary by release: the current installation manual lists Java 8, Maven 3.6.3, Protobuf 2.5, Hadoop 3.3.6, and Tez, while Hive 4.2.x requires at least JDK 21 and works with Hadoop 3.4.1 and Tez 0.10.5. Check the requirements for the specific release before planning a deployment.

The 3.x release line reached end of life in October 2024, with no further updates or releases planned for that series. New deployments should not treat it as a maintained option.

Pricing

Apache Hive is open-source software. Its Apache Hive plan costs 0.00 USD per free. There are no paid tiers or plan-based feature differences in the pricing facts; teams should evaluate the operational fit of the software and its prerequisites instead.

Platforms

Hive is available across API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, and Windows environments. Its deployment model is hybrid, with separate storage and compute, data lake support, and streaming ingestion. Linux is the stated common production environment; Mac is commonly used for development.

Who it's for

Hive is a strong fit for teams with large datasets, SQL clients, and a need for shared metadata across Hive, Spark, or Impala. Its storage options, transaction support, security mechanisms, and named governance integrations also suit organizations integrating a warehouse into a broader data platform.

It is a weaker fit for teams seeking a simple, self-contained database or a release choice without compatibility planning. Teams considering Hive 3.x in particular should account for its end-of-life status rather than assume ongoing updates.

Pros and cons

Shared metadata across engines: Hive Metastore serves Hive, Impala, and Spark, making a central catalog useful in multi-engine environments.
Broad storage and connectivity: SQL access through JDBC and ODBC, alongside support for major cloud storage systems, fits varied data platforms.
Transaction limits depend on format: Full ACID support applies to ORC tables; other formats have insert-only transactions.
Release compatibility needs care: Prerequisites differ by release, and Hive 3.x is end of life with no further releases planned.

Alternatives

For another free, self-hosted data warehouse, consider Databend; its Community plan is 0.00 USD per free and self-hosted in your own environment. Choose Exasol if its freemium model and pay-as-you-go compute plans fit better: XS is 3.30 USD per month for 8 vCPUs and 64 GB memory, while S is 6.60 USD per month for 16 vCPUs.

Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse is another option. Teradata VantageCloud is an alternative. Databricks Notebooks offers a web-based Free Edition with one serverless workspace and limited compute size and usage. Firebolt offers a free, self-hosted Core plan with no usage limits, but it cannot be used to build a hosted SaaS competing with its managed service. BigQuery Data Clean Rooms is another option. Cloudera Data Lake Service is a paid alternative with custom pricing.

Verdict

Choose Apache Hive when your team needs SQL access to large datasets, a shared metadata catalog, and integration across storage and analytics engines. Its open-source availability and broad platform connections are compelling; the main reasons to look elsewhere are its release-specific dependency burden and the end-of-life 3.x series.
