Overview

AnyList is a shared list, recipe, and meal-planning app for people who want household food planning connected to grocery shopping. It is strongest for households that will use its recipe tools alongside lists; those who only need a free grocery list may not need its paid tier.

Its combination of quick list entry, recipe imports, and calendar-based planning makes it more than a checklist, while the free plan puts a firm ceiling on recipe imports and omits meal planning. See our Shopping List Apps guide for more choices.

Key features

Lists that coordinate shopping

Autocomplete and automatic grocery categorization help keep shopping lists orderly as items are added. Shared lists update instantly, which is useful when multiple people are coordinating a shop. Custom lists for tasks, packing, and other purposes broaden its use, and barcode scanning is supported.

Siri and Alexa can add items by voice. Online shopping connects to services including Instacart, Walmart, Kroger, Safeway, Albertsons, Amazon Fresh, and H-E-B, giving users a route from list to retailer without making the app only a grocery list.

Recipes and meal planning

Recipes can be organized into collections and searched by name or ingredient; their ingredients can be sent to a shopping list. Imports work with popular recipe sites and blogs, but free users can import only five web recipes. That cap is workable for trying the feature, not for building a substantial recipe archive from the web.

The meal-planning calendar accepts recipes and notes and can generate a grocery list for selected dates. This connects planning to shopping in a practical way, but meal planning is reserved for Complete subscribers, so the free plan cannot deliver that end-to-end workflow.

Sync, privacy, and support

Lists and recipes sync across signed-in devices, and account data is backed up in the cloud. AnyList's privacy policy says it uses SSL encryption and reasonable safeguards, while cautioning that security cannot be guaranteed. The company says it reads and responds to every email; Complete subscribers get priority in the support queue.

Pricing

AnyList uses a freemium model. The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and covers core list creation and sharing, with up to five imported web recipes. It suits people who chiefly need shared lists, but the import cap and absence of meal planning make it a limited choice for recipe-led household planning.

AnyList Complete — Individual: 9.99 USD per year, billed $9.99 / year. It adds unlimited web recipe imports, Mac and web apps, meal planning, and premium features. This is the fit for one subscriber who wants the full planning workflow.
AnyList Complete — Household: 14.99 USD per year, billed $14.99 / year. It includes the same stated Complete capabilities with a household subscription. It is the relevant choice when the subscription is for a household rather than an individual.

The paid plans remove the free recipe-import ceiling and add meal planning and desktop access. The plan terms provided do not state seat counts or a trial, so the practical distinction to weigh is individual versus household subscription, not an assumed number of users.

Platforms

AnyList supports Android, iOS, macOS, web, and an extension. The Individual Complete plan explicitly includes Mac and web apps, while the free plan is described around core list creation and sharing; users choosing free should not assume desktop apps are included.

Who it's for

AnyList is a good fit for households that share grocery lists and want recipes, meal plans, and shopping lists to work together. It is also useful for people who want one place for household lists beyond groceries, or who shop through one of its supported online retailers.

It is less compelling for someone who only wants a free shared checklist, or for a cook who expects substantial web recipe importing without paying. The five-import limit makes the free tier a sampler of recipe organization rather than a durable recipe-import library.

Pros and cons

Pro: Instant shared-list updates, autocomplete, and grocery categorization make coordination and item organization central strengths.
Pro: Recipes can feed ingredients into lists, and meal plans can generate groceries for selected dates, tying planning to action.
Pro: Custom lists, barcode scanning, voice entry, and retailer connections extend the app beyond basic manual grocery lists.
Con: Free recipe imports stop at five, and meal planning is a paid feature, limiting the free plan for cooks who want a connected workflow.
Con: Mac and web apps are included with Complete rather than the free plan, which narrows the no-cost experience for desktop users.

Alternatives

Choose KitchenOwl if free, open-source software and self-hosting matter more than AnyList's paid recipe imports and meal planning; it supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, Windows, and self-hosting.

Buy Me a Pie! is another freemium option: its free plan allows three shopping lists shared with two other accounts, and its Pro monthly plan costs 2.99 USD per month. It is worth considering if that list-and-sharing allowance is enough and a monthly option suits you.

OurGroceries keeps all features and list sharing in its free plan, with ads on a few screens; its Remove Ads subscription costs 1.00 USD per month. Choose it if retaining free access to all features matters more than AnyList's recipe-import and meal-planning workflow.

BuyBye offers a free plan capped at five shopping lists, two people per list, a five-recipe box, and current-week meal planning, with Pro at 9.99 USD per year. It may suit someone whose needs fit those explicit free limits.

GroceryShare has a free Simple plan with grocery lists, smart categories, shopping mode, and basic recipes; it is an alternative for someone who wants those basics without AnyList's stated Complete subscription.

Bring! keeps core functions, including shared shopping lists, recipes, and special offers, free. It is an alternative for readers who want those core functions at no charge.

Grocery Buddy is a free option with all features included.

Groly is a free alternative for readers who want a self-hosted, Docker-based service with admin-invited users rather than open registration.

Verdict

Choose AnyList if your household will use shared shopping lists together with recipe organization and meal planning: its strongest case is the way recipes and calendar plans can turn into shopping lists. Look elsewhere if free use is essential for recipe imports or meal planning, since the free plan caps imports at five and excludes the calendar.
