Overview

OpenEduCat is a modular education platform that combines student information management, learning tools and campus operations. It suits institutions looking to connect academic and administrative systems, especially those able to manage a self-hosted deployment. Its broad module set and uncapped Community Edition are strong draws, but paid use requires a Core license.

Key features

More than 70 modules share a single database, and the SIS supports real-time collaboration around student data. Assessments and certificates sit alongside modules such as Assignment, Classroom and Exam, while native integrations connect admissions, fees, library and hostel systems. That breadth can reduce the need to coordinate separate systems; institutions should weigh it against the work of choosing and configuring the modules they need.

Community Edition supports SCORM, xAPI and LTI 1.3, plus SAML, Shibboleth, OAuth2, Azure AD and Google Workspace single sign-on. API access and Android and iOS apps add integration and mobile options. This is a substantial foundation for a free edition, though the value of those capabilities depends on whether an institution can operate the platform itself.

Institutions can deploy in the cloud or on-premise and retain ownership of their data. OpenEduCat describes FERPA-aligned handling, audit trails and enterprise-grade security. Self-hosting avoids student limits and license call-home, but the technical requirements include Linux, Python 3.10+ and PostgreSQL 14+, and capacity depends on the hardware.

Pricing

The Community Edition costs 0.00 USD per free, has no time limit and imposes no course, assignment or learner cap. It is licensed under LGPL-3.0, with public source code on GitHub. The trade-off is operational: institutions provide the hardware and manage the self-hosted setup.

Paid deployments require OpenEduCat Core — 1 Year at 489.00 USD per year. Core is the required base, not a complete substitute for every module. Modules & Apps — 1 Year costs 79.00 USD per year and adds modular education features, with Assignment, Classroom, Exam and SSO among the examples. Institutions can add modules as needs grow, and the pricing pages state there are no per-student fees.

Two-year options are priced at 978.00 USD per year for Core and 158.00 USD per year for Modules & Apps; both say buy 2 years, get the 3rd year free. The Cloud Pack is 29.00 USD per year for 25 users, or 58.00 USD per year on the two-year term, with the same third-year offer. It is cloud-only and has an explicit 25-user limit, unlike the uncapped Community Edition.

For on-premise licensing, OpenEduCat Core — One-Time On-Premise is 1319.00 USD per month, while Modules & Apps — One-Time On-Premise is 208.00 USD per once. The 15-day trial requires no credit card, but purchases are subject to a No Refund Policy. Institutions should account for the required Core cost and hardware before choosing a deployment.

Platforms

OpenEduCat supports Android, iOS, API access, Linux and self-hosting. The Android and iOS apps are listed as products, and the self-hosted requirements make Linux, Python 3.10+ and PostgreSQL 14+ relevant to deployment planning.

Who it's for

OpenEduCat is a good fit for schools and other education institutions that want academic and campus operations in one system, need standards-based learning support, or value data ownership and deployment choice. The free edition is most appealing to organizations with the staff and hardware to self-host. Institutions seeking a managed cloud option can consider the Cloud Pack, but its 25-user cap makes it a narrower fit. Buyers who need only a specific accounting, behavior or curriculum tool may be better served by a more focused product.

Pros and cons

Pro: The Community Edition has no course, assignment or learner cap, making it useful for institutions that can supply adequate hardware.
Pro: More than 70 modules, native integrations and shared student data support coordinated academic and administrative work.
Pro: Cloud and on-premise deployment, data ownership and broad SSO support give institutions meaningful control over architecture and access.
Con: Every paid deployment needs Core, so institutions cannot price a paid setup by selecting modules alone.
Con: The 25 Users Cloud Pack is limited to cloud deployments and 25 users, while self-hosting requires compatible infrastructure.
Con: The No Refund Policy raises the stakes of choosing a paid configuration, despite the 15-day trial.

Alternatives

For a narrower accounting need, Software Unlimited School Accounting System is a paid option with a free trial, local installation or hosted operation, and Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows support. Black Mountain School Accounting is another accounting-focused choice, with custom pricing based on population size and applications and no per-user, usage or hidden fees.

Institutions prioritizing behavior support can consider PowerSchool Behavior Support, a paid Android, iOS and web option whose pricing requires contacting PowerSchool for a demo. For broader school business operations, Skyward School Business Suite uses a custom proposal based on total enrollment, instructional campuses and a personalized feature suite. Sparkrock Ed K-12 ERP bases its EdHRP site license on total employee count and SchoolDay on student count.

For campus marketplaces, Jenzabar Campus Marketplace is a paid API and web option with pricing available by demo. Institutions focused on curriculum management can consider Kuali Curriculum Management, also an API and web product with pricing through a personalized demo. Harris AptaFund is a paid self-hosted and web option with pricing by request and a custom demo.

Readers comparing category-specific products can browse School Accounting Software, Course Registration Software, Exam Scheduling Software, Education CRM Software and Learning Management Systems.

Verdict

Choose OpenEduCat if your institution wants a connected academic and administrative platform, values control of its data, and can support either its self-hosted requirements or the mandatory Core cost for paid deployment. Its uncapped free edition is the clearest entry point; look elsewhere if you need only one focused function or cannot take on the infrastructure and configuration decisions.
