Overview

Outerbase AI is a database workspace for engineers, researchers, and analysts who want help querying and presenting data. Its appeal is the combination of schema-aware query assistance, charts, and dashboards; the free tier is restrictive, and self-hosting is reserved for Enterprise.

EZQL works with a database’s current structure, while the platform also offers an AI query editor and connections to a broad range of database systems. That makes it a stronger fit for teams seeking a connected workflow than for someone who only needs occasional SQL generation.

Key features

Query assistance grounded in schema

EZQL turns natural-language requests into queries, charts, and complete dashboards, using the database schema as context. That grounding is useful when a request depends on the actual structure of a database. The AI editor can also generate queries, fix broken ones, and optimize query results, extending its value beyond first drafts.

Charts can be generated from datasets or within AI conversations, helping users move from questions to visual summaries. Trend detection and explanation is coming soon, so it should not factor into a decision about current capabilities.

Database connections and controls

Connections cover Postgres, MySQL, SQLite, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Microsoft SQL Server, Snowflake, Google BigQuery, and Amazon Redshift. Integrations with DigitalOcean, Neon, Turso, and Cloudflare add options for teams using those providers. The range is a strength, though Free and Hobby restrict users to transactional databases.

Outerbase says it is SOC 2 Type 2 and HIPAA compliant. Security controls include two-factor authentication, database-role access controls, AES/RSA encryption, SSH tunneling, and private AI models that are not trained on customer data. Customer data stays in the customer’s database; Outerbase stores an encrypted version of the schema for AI features. These controls may suit teams with heightened security requirements, but HIPAA and SOC 2 compliance are specifically part of Enterprise’s offering.

Pricing

Outerbase uses a freemium model. The main trade-off across its plans is between query, dashboard, and user capacity on lower tiers and broader database access or deployment and support options higher up.

Plan	Price	What it includes
Free	0.00 USD per free	Up to 5 users, 1 base, 10 EZQL queries/mo, 3 saved queries, 1 dashboard, transactional databases only.
Hobby	9.00 USD per month, per user / month billed annually	Up to 10 users, unlimited bases, 100 EZQL queries/mo, 25 saved queries, 5 dashboards, transactional databases only.
Pro	30.00 USD per month, per user / month billed annually	Unlimited users and bases, up to 1000 EZQL queries, unlimited saved queries and dashboards, all databases.
Enterprise	Custom pricing	HIPAA and SOC 2 compliance, priority support with a dedicated team, custom AI models, prompt fine-tuning, private cloud deployments, audit trails, and activity logs.

Free is suitable for a small evaluation or light individual use, but 10 monthly EZQL queries and one dashboard leave little room for sustained use. Hobby raises the query allowance and dashboard count, but its annual per-user billing and transactional-only database access make it a limited step up for teams needing varied data sources. Pro removes the database-type restriction and offers much more room for shared work; its per-user annual billing is the key cost consideration. Enterprise is the fit for organizations that need its compliance, deployment, or support provisions, with custom pricing.

Platforms

Outerbase is available on web, API, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted deployments. Dedicated desktop apps are available for Mac devices with M1 or newer chips and modern Windows devices. Self-hosting is limited to Enterprise, so teams that require control over deployment should expect to engage with that plan.

Who it's for

Outerbase is best suited to database users who want one workflow for asking questions, refining queries, and turning results into charts or dashboards. Engineers and analysts may value the schema-aware assistance and query repair; researchers may benefit from generating visual summaries alongside query work. It is less compelling for occasional query generation when the free allowance is likely to be enough, or for anyone requiring self-hosting without an Enterprise plan.

Pros and cons

Schema-aware assistance: EZQL can use the current database structure, and the editor also handles query repair and optimization.
Query-to-presentation workflow: Chart and dashboard generation keeps visualizing data close to query work.
Broad database coverage: Pro supports all databases, including analytical systems such as Snowflake and BigQuery.
Low free query ceiling: 10 EZQL queries per month and one dashboard constrain ongoing use.
Database restrictions on cheaper tiers: Free and Hobby are limited to transactional databases.
Self-hosting requires Enterprise: Users who need a self-hosted deployment cannot choose a lower plan.

Alternatives

AI SQL Generators is a useful category to compare if query generation is the main need; AI Database Assistants is the broader category for database-focused help.

NatureQuery is worth considering for a simpler free entry point: its Free plan includes 50 queries per month, one database connection, Excel and CSV export, and 30-day query history. Outerbase offers charts and dashboards and has a higher connection range on Pro, while NatureQuery’s free allowance is more generous for query volume.

QueryPlane may suit users looking for a self-hosted option at the free tier: it includes up to three apps, one database connection, 50 AI prompts per month, and community support. Outerbase offers a larger stated database range, but requires Enterprise for self-hosting.

SQL Mocker is an alternative for individual exploration: its free Explore plan includes one user, 50 AI queries total, and five saved projects. Outerbase instead combines query assistance with charts and dashboards, though its free monthly query allowance is lower.

Vanna AI is another freemium option with API and self-hosted availability. Wren AI offers a free open-source context engine for individual developers through CLI and MCP, without a UI. IDERA AI SQL Query Generator is a free web option. Savvina AI and SQLer are freemium web alternatives.

Verdict

Choose Outerbase AI if you work regularly with databases and want schema-aware query help alongside chart and dashboard creation, especially if Pro’s access to all databases fits your workflow. Look elsewhere if you need a generous free query allowance, transactional restrictions are a problem, or self-hosting is required on a lower-cost plan.
