Overview

Animation Desk combines frame-based drawing with tools for assembling animatics and storyboard material. You can begin with paint tools or bring in photos, video clips and pre-built animation templates. The app is free to download on iOS, Android and Windows, with a free plan and paid plans that add capacity and export options.

KDAN says the app will remain available under existing paid plans, but it will no longer proactively develop features or provide routine version-maintenance updates. That is a material drawback for anyone choosing software as a long-term part of a production workflow: the current toolset may suit a project, but users should not expect an active development cycle.

Key features

Paint tools, onion skinning, layers, sound effects and frame-rate settings cover the fundamentals of building short animated sequences. Onion skinning helps artists compare neighboring frames, while layers and frame-rate settings provide some control over drawing and timing. The controls are basic, so Animation Desk is a better fit for rough animation and animatic sketches than for work requiring extensive animation control.

Projects can incorporate photos and video clips as well as templates. Stock collections, batch frame pasting and effects for video and photos add ways to assemble and modify material, although some features are limited to particular app versions. Custom characters, scene templates and voiceover tools also support storyboard and animatic work.

Exports include video, GIF, PDF, PSD and image sequences, with a maximum resolution of 1080p. Editable projects can be exchanged among the Android, iOS and Windows apps, making it practical to continue work across those platforms. iOS users can also export animations to Photoshop for further editing. The format range is a strength for handoffs and different presentation needs, while the 1080p ceiling may be restrictive for projects that require higher-resolution output.

Pricing

The iOS Basic Plan has no published price. It includes five brushes, three sketch layers, three sequences and one animatic storyboard. Those caps make it a constrained option for small exercises or trying the workflow, rather than a roomy plan for ongoing projects.

Animation Desk Pro iOS costs 2.49 USD per month, billed annually at $29.99. It adds 46+ brushes, eight sketch layers, unlimited sequences and storyboards, watermark-free video and GIF exports, PDF and Photoshop exports, and 500 GB of KDAN Cloud storage. This is the clearest upgrade for iOS users who need greater project capacity and clean video or GIF output.

Creativity 365 for Individuals costs 4.99 USD per month, billed annually at $59.99. It includes Animation Desk Pro features, advanced features in NoteLedge, Write-on Video and Markup, and 1TB of KDAN Cloud storage across Android, iOS, Mac and Windows. It fits users who want the broader KDAN app bundle and more cloud storage; those focused on Animation Desk alone may find the Pro plan more direct. The iOS Basic Plan and Pro plan are iOS-specific, while Creativity 365 includes Android, iOS, Mac and Windows.

Platforms

Animation Desk supports iOS, Android and Windows, and editable projects can be exchanged across those versions. KDAN lists support for iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows devices and provides helpdesk@kdanmobile.com for support. The app is free to download on the three supported platforms.

Who it's for

Animation Desk makes sense for beginners, students and learners developing animation fundamentals, and for professional animators preparing rough animation, animatic sketches or storyboards. Its templates, voiceover tools and cross-platform project exchange help with early-stage work. It is a weaker fit for users who need advanced controls, output beyond 1080p or a product receiving routine feature development and maintenance updates.

Pros and cons

Pros: Video, GIF, PDF, PSD and image-sequence exports give projects several useful handoff and presentation formats.
Pros: Editable projects move among iOS, Android and Windows, supporting work across those platforms.
Pros: Pro removes watermarks from video and GIF exports and removes the Basic Plan’s sequence and storyboard caps.
Cons: Animation controls are basic, limiting its appeal for workflows that need extensive control.
Cons: Maximum export resolution is 1080p, which may not meet higher-resolution output needs.
Cons: KDAN will not proactively develop new features or provide routine version-maintenance updates.
Cons: Some editing features are limited to particular app versions, so the same workflow may not be available everywhere.

Verdict

Animation Desk is a sensible choice for learners and animators who need a cross-platform tool for rough animation, animatics and storyboards, especially when export flexibility matters. Its basic controls and broad file support serve early-stage work well. Look elsewhere if you need advanced animation control, output above 1080p or confidence in ongoing feature and maintenance updates.
