Overview

Amazon Photos keeps original customer content and generated assets in Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering, and supports original-quality storage. Compatible formats include common image and video types such as JPEG, HEIC, ProRaw, MP4, QuickTime, and several RAW formats. The personal, non-commercial-use restriction makes it unsuitable for professional or business archives.

Quota and inactivity rules make ongoing account management important. Once over quota, an account cannot upload, sync, or share; after 180 days, files are deleted until the account is no longer over quota. After two years without an upload, download, or sign-in, files are deleted following prior notification. Keep another copy if you may exceed your allowance or leave the account dormant.

Key features

Auto-Save backs up camera rolls from iOS and Android, while Desktop Backup saves folders from Windows and Mac computers. That covers the main personal-device libraries, though the shared 5 GB free cap can fill quickly when video is included.

Image recognition organizes photos by people, places, things, and dates, and natural-language search helps find images without relying only on manual filing. Tagging is enabled automatically when the service is first used, but can be disabled in account settings—useful for people who prefer not to use image-recognition tagging.

Sharing supports up to 2,500 groups, each with as many as 50 members. Family Vault allows up to six members, each with an Amazon Photos account at no added cost. These are generous ways to share a personal library, although they do not change the personal-use restriction.

The built-in editor handles cropping, adjustments, and filters, making basic changes possible without another app. Amazon Photos can also display images on Echo Show, Echo Spot, and Fire TV, including as backgrounds or screensavers. U.S. customers can order prints, photo books, and gifts through Amazon Prints.

Pricing

The free Amazon Photos storage plan costs 0.00 USD per free and provides 5 GB shared across photos and videos. It is best for a small library or a trial run, not a large collection that includes regular video backups.

The Amazon Prime Photos benefit costs 0.00 USD per free and includes unlimited full-resolution photo storage, plus 5 GB for videos and other files. It is the clearest fit for Prime members with photo-heavy libraries; video remains subject to a separate, small allowance.

Paid storage plans are billed monthly:

50 GB: 0.99 USD per month, about 7 hours of 1080p HD video.
100 GB: 1.99 USD per month, about 14 hours of 1080p HD video.
1 TB: 6.99 USD per month, about 140 hours of 1080p HD video.
2 TB: 11.99 USD per month, about 280 hours of 1080p HD video.

The 50 GB and 100 GB tiers suit modest libraries that need more room than the free allowance; 1 TB and 2 TB are better for larger collections and substantial video. The lower tiers cost less but leave less headroom, so users with ongoing video backups should choose by expected usage rather than price alone.

Platforms

Amazon Photos supports Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows. Automatic mobile camera-roll backup and desktop folder backup cover both phone and computer libraries. Echo Show, Echo Spot, and Fire TV provide additional display options.

Who it's for

Choose Amazon Photos if you want personal backups across mobile and desktop, searchable photo organization, and straightforward family sharing. Prime members with mostly photos get the strongest storage proposition. It is a weaker fit for video-heavy libraries that need more than 5 GB without a paid tier, for commercial use, or for anyone unwilling to maintain an account within quota and sign in periodically.

Pros and cons

Pro: Prime includes unlimited full-resolution photo storage, making it well suited to photo-first libraries.
Pro: Automatic phone and desktop backups cover iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac computers.
Pro: Family Vault supports six members, while sharing groups can include up to 50 people each.
Con: The non-Prime free allowance is only 5 GB shared by photos and videos.
Con: Over-quota accounts lose upload, sync, and sharing access, and files can be deleted after 180 days.
Con: Two years without upload, download, or sign-in activity can lead to deletion after prior notification.
Con: Personal, non-commercial use only rules out business archives.

Alternatives

IDrive is worth considering if Linux support or a 100 GB one-user plan matters more than Amazon Photos' Prime photo-storage benefit. Cryptee is a better direction for readers who prioritize software and cryptography that are open source and independently reviewable. Ente Photos may suit someone looking for a 10 GB free tier or a 50 GB family plan.

Flickr is an alternative for readers who prefer a free allowance defined by 1,000 public photo and video uploads, or want its annually billed Pro plan. Synology Photos is relevant if you already have a Synology NAS and want a free option that requires one. Google Photos is another photo-storage option to compare. PhotoStructure may appeal to readers seeking portable libraries and grouping of duplicates and edited copies. Piwigo is an alternative for people considering self-hosted photo management.

Verdict

Amazon Photos is a sound choice for personal, photo-first libraries—especially for Prime members who can use its unlimited full-resolution photo storage and want automatic backups across devices. Its principal drawback is the tight video allowance on free and Prime plans, compounded by firm over-quota and inactivity deletion rules. Look elsewhere for commercial use, a video-heavy library without a suitable paid tier, or a service you can safely leave unattended.
