Overview

Amazon CloudWatch Logs collects and retains log data from AWS resources, applications, on-premises systems, and other clouds. It is a strong fit for teams already operating in AWS that want log investigation tied to their wider monitoring stack. Its breadth is appealing, but usage-based charges make log volume and feature use central to the buying decision.

Key features

CloudWatch Logs divides log groups into Standard, for real-time monitoring and advanced analytics, and Infrequent Access, for occasional queries and forensic analysis. That gives teams a way to align log access with operational needs, though the occasional-use class is a poor fit for logs that need constant analysis.

Logs Insights supports filters, aggregations, and regular expressions, and can visualize time-series results and export them to CloudWatch Dashboards. Live Tail adds an interactive view of streaming logs for incident response. CloudWatch Logs Anomaly Detection uses machine learning to identify recurring structures, notable content, trends, and anomalies; these capabilities make the service useful beyond basic retention.

Collection can use the CloudWatch Agent, installed with AWS Systems Manager, or the PutLogData API action. Native integrations span AWS services, and CloudWatch also works with Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry. Direct third-party log integrations include CrowdStrike Falcon, Microsoft Office 365, Okta Auth0, Microsoft Entra ID, Wiz, and GitHub Audit Logs. Logs can be searched and analyzed across accounts from a monitoring account at no additional cost, and CloudWatch integrates with Amazon OpenSearch Service for analysis without moving or duplicating log data.

Security features include encryption in transit and at rest, AWS KMS encryption for log groups, and data-protection policies that scan ingested logs and mask sensitive information. CloudWatch Logs is PCI and FedRAMP compliant. CloudWatch also supports resource and application monitoring across AWS, on-premises, and other cloud workloads, with alarms and automated responses for operational issues.

Pricing

CloudWatch Logs is usage-priced, with no upfront commitment or minimum fee; charges are assessed at the end of each month and rates vary by Region. Published Logs data ingestion is 0.50 USD per month for the first 10 TB per month in US East (N. Virginia), while archive storage is 0.03 USD per month. These rates are pay-as-you-go, so they do not establish a fixed monthly total: ingestion, retained data, query scans, and optional Live Tail use affect the bill.

The Free tier costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 5 GB per month for ingestion, archive storage, and Logs Insights data scanned, plus 1,800 Live Tail minutes per month. It also includes one Contributor Insights rule per month, 10 custom or detailed monitoring metrics, three custom dashboards referencing up to 50 metrics each per month, and 10 alarm metrics for applicable standard-resolution alarms. This is useful for small workloads or evaluation, but the log allowance is shared across ingestion, storage, and scans, and it does not remove usage charges beyond the included allowances. Paid Live Tail is $0.01 per minute.

Pay-as-you-go and Paid usage have custom pricing beyond published rates, with charges varying by Region and usage. There is no free trial, so readers should estimate their expected log volume and Live Tail use before relying on the service for a larger workload.

Platforms

CloudWatch Logs is delivered as a cloud service with web and API access. Supported environments include Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS, Red Hat OpenShift on AWS, and Kubernetes on Amazon EC. Logs can also come from on-premises resources and other clouds, making the service practical for mixed environments, though its deepest native integration is with AWS.

Who it's for

CloudWatch Logs is best for organizations running AWS applications and infrastructure that want collection, search, live investigation, anomaly detection, and cross-account analysis in one monitoring environment. It also suits teams that can manage usage-based spend and want AWS-native integrations or centralized views across accounts. A team seeking a standalone, self-managed log platform, or one that needs a predictable flat subscription, should compare alternatives before committing.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad AWS integration and no-additional-cost cross-account log analysis suit organizations already managing multiple AWS accounts.
Pro: Logs Insights, Live Tail, and anomaly detection cover both retrospective queries and streaming investigations.
Pro: Encryption, KMS support, sensitive-data masking, and PCI and FedRAMP compliance address important security needs.
Con: Usage-based charges vary by Region, and ingestion, archive storage, query scans, and paid Live Tail can all affect the bill.
Con: The Free tier's 5 GB allowance covers several activities together, so it may be consumed quickly by active workloads.

Alternatives

ELK Stack is worth considering for teams that want a self-managed option across Linux, macOS, Windows, and API environments, with a free plan and a freemium model. Sumo Logic may suit readers looking for a web-based freemium service; its Free plan includes 20 daily credits for logs, metrics, and traces, seven-day log retention, and up to three users.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Logging is an option for OCI users who want a 10 GB monthly storage allowance and a published usage rate of 0.05 USD per month. VictoriaLogs offers a free open-source option for teams seeking single-node or cluster deployment under the Apache License 2.0.

Kiwi Syslog Server is another alternative. Logmanager offers a free plan with 100 GB storage and unlimited users, which may appeal to teams prioritizing those stated limits. OpenObserve has a free plan with 200 GB per day ingestion and 15-day retention. NXLog is an alternative for readers who want a free plan covering 10 sources or a Premium plan with unlimited sources.

Verdict

Choose Amazon CloudWatch Logs if your workloads already rely on AWS and you want log collection, investigation, live viewing, and cross-account analysis alongside AWS monitoring. Its strongest advantage is native AWS breadth; its main drawback is that a predictable total cost requires active control of usage and Region-specific rates. Teams seeking fixed subscription pricing or a self-managed platform should look elsewhere.
