Overview

Airtable is a cloud platform for connecting relational data to apps and team workflows. It suits teams that need to shape shared information into custom business apps, though its Free plan’s 1,000-record cap makes it a limited starting point for data-heavy work.

Founded in 2012 and headquartered in San Francisco, Airtable says 500,000 companies build with it, including 90% of the Fortune 100. The company also cites 50M+ apps and agents and 10M active users.

Key features

Relational data and app building

Airtable combines databases with app interfaces, views and reporting, so teams can organize records and present them in workflows built around their needs. Its no-code AI app-building capability lets teams create business apps and deploy AI agents inside them. That breadth is useful when a team wants a custom operational tool rather than a database alone; it also means Airtable is a more involved choice than a simple task list.

Automation and integrations

Automations support repeatable processes, while integrations include Slack, Google Drive, Salesforce, Jira and Zendesk. Native integrations are available on Free, Team, Business and Enterprise Scale, including Slack, email, Dropbox, Box, Gmail, Google Drive and Typeform. This gives teams several ways to connect their workflow, although the Free plan’s 75 automations per base may be restrictive for busy processes.

Governance and security

Customizable collaborator permissions, password-protected or email-domain-restricted share links, record-level revision history and two-factor authentication give teams practical controls over access and change tracking. Airtable states coverage or certification information for SOC 2 Type 2, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, ISO/IEC 27701:2019, HIPAA and TX-RAMP Level 2; its privacy program is designed for GDPR, UK GDPR and CCPA/CPRA compliance.

Pricing

Airtable uses freemium pricing, with a 14-day trial and paid plans from $20/user/mo billed annually. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is intended for individuals or very small teams. It allows 1,000 records per base, 1,000 API calls per workspace per month, 1 GB of attachments per base, two weeks of revision history and 75 automations per base. Collaboration is capped at five Editor or Creator collaborators and 50 Commenters, while read-only collaborators are unlimited. Those limits make it useful for a small workflow, but not a generous base for growing operational data.

Team costs 20.00 USD per month (billed billed annually). It raises the limits to 50,000 records per base, 100,000 API calls per workspace per month and 20 GB of attachments per base, with one year of revision and snapshot history. Airtable positions it for teams building apps for shared workflows; the increased capacity makes that a more credible starting point for group use than Free.

Business costs 45.00 USD per month (billed billed annually), and includes 125,000 records per base, unlimited API calls per workspace per month, 100 GB of attachments per base and one year of revision and snapshot history. It is the stronger fit when API use or attachment storage would press against Team’s limits, but the higher per-user price is hard to justify for a small team with modest needs.

Enterprise Scale has custom pricing, with scalable app building and governance and administration. It is the option for organizations seeking those capabilities at enterprise scale. The listed Team and Business prices are per month and billed annually; account for that commitment when comparing them with monthly subscriptions.

Platforms

Airtable runs in the cloud and offers web access, API and extension support, as well as macOS, Windows, iOS and Android apps. The desktop requirements are macOS 12 or later and Windows 10 64-bit or later; mobile apps require iOS 16 or later or Android 7 or later.

Who it's for

Airtable is a good fit for individuals and very small teams starting with structured workflows, and especially for teams that need custom apps, relational data, automation and access controls in one platform. Teams building shared workflow apps have a clearer fit in Team, while larger data or API needs point toward Business. It is less compelling when all a team needs is a lightweight project tracker or when the Free plan’s record and collaborator ceilings are too low.

Pros and cons

Pros: Relational data, interfaces, automation, reporting and AI app building support custom workflows without requiring code.
Pros: Fine-grained sharing controls and record-level history help teams manage access and track changes.
Pros: Native integrations are available even on Free, giving small teams several ways to connect common services.
Cons: Free is capped at 1,000 records per base, 1 GB of attachments and two weeks of history, so a successful workflow can outgrow it.
Cons: Free collaboration allows only five Editor or Creator collaborators, which can constrain a team before its read-only audience becomes an issue.
Cons: Team and Business are billed annually, and Business’s higher price is justified mainly when its expanded record, API or storage limits matter.
