Overview

vkdt is a raw photo and video workflow toolbox for photographers and video makers who want a configurable processing pipeline. It is a strong fit for people comfortable building node-based workflows, but its Vulkan hardware requirement narrows the field.

Key features

Its processing graph connects multiple inputs and outputs, with GLSL shaders and Vulkan handling the work on the GPU. That flexibility suits users who want to shape a pipeline around their material; it is less appealing if they prefer a fixed, conventional editing sequence. GPU-only processing is designed for high performance, but requires a Vulkan-capable GPU. The maker recommends 4 GB of video RAM, rising to at least 8 GB for large graphs or images above 50 megapixels.

For still photography, vkdt brings together colour management, noise profiling, automatic parameter optimisation and U-Net-based denoising, alongside a folder-based image database, catalog workflow, lens correction and local adjustments. The combination covers both image processing and file organisation, making it a broader toolbox than a bare raw converter.

Video support extends to real-time work with animations, timelapses and raw footage, including Magic Lantern MLV and MotionCam MCRAW. Inputs include JPEG, OpenEXR, raw stills and video; exports include JPEG, JPEG XL, OpenEXR, PFM, BC1, H.264 and ProRes. A command-line utility replaces display nodes with export nodes, a practical option for export-oriented workflows.

Pricing

vkdt is free and open source: its plan costs 0.00 USD per free, with no free trial. The 2-clause BSD licence applies unless otherwise marked, and some source files contain GPLv3 code. There is no paid tier to unlock more capacity. Downloads include a source release, nightly AppImage, nightly Windows binaries and NixOS packages.

Platforms

vkdt supports Linux, macOS and Windows. The Vulkan-capable GPU requirement applies regardless of platform, so compatibility with a listed operating system alone is not enough to establish that a machine is suitable.

Who it's for

vkdt is best for photographers and video makers who want raw stills, timelapses and video in one GPU-driven, node-based workflow, and who have compatible graphics hardware. It is a less natural choice for users seeking a conventional sequence-based editor or whose GPU does not support Vulkan.

Pros and cons

Pros: One node-based pipeline handles still photography and video, with multiple inputs and outputs.
Pros: Photography tools span colour management, denoising, catalog workflow, lens correction and local adjustments.
Pros: The free, open-source plan includes a command-line export utility, with no paid plan to budget for.
Cons: A Vulkan-capable GPU is mandatory, and larger graphs or images above 50 megapixels call for at least 8 GB of video RAM.
Cons: The graph-based approach may not suit people who want a fixed, conventional editing workflow.

Alternatives

darktable is another free, open-source photography workflow application for Linux, macOS and Windows; choose it if you want a photography-focused alternative. RawTherapee is free on the same platforms, but lacks digital asset management, printing and uploading features, so it is a fit when those omissions are acceptable.

Canon Digital Photo Professional is free for macOS and Windows and is included in the initial setup for compatible Canon cameras. dcraw is free for all uses on Linux and Windows. FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO is free on macOS and Windows, but requires a compatible FUJIFILM camera connected by USB. Hasselblad Phocus is free RAW processing software for Mac and PC. Nikon NX Studio is free desktop software for macOS and Windows, with Nikon camera and file-format support varying.

Adobe Lightroom has a free plan and paid plans with 1 TB cloud storage and monthly generative credits; choose it if cloud storage and those credits matter to your workflow.

Verdict

Choose vkdt if you want a free, open-source toolbox that brings raw photo and video processing together in a flexible node graph, and your GPU supports Vulkan. If you need software that works without that graphics requirement or prefer a conventional workflow, look elsewhere.
