Overview

Aila is Oak’s AI lesson assistant for teachers creating or adapting lessons and teaching resources. It is best suited to teachers working with the English national curriculum who want a bundle of editable classroom materials; its beta status, subject differences, usage limits, and lack of mobile support are important considerations.

Key features

A generated lesson includes a lesson plan, slide deck, two quizzes and a worksheet, all editable and ready to download. That gives teachers a useful starting package rather than a single plan, though they should expect to review and adjust the materials before using them.

Aila can also make glossaries, tasks and quizzes to supplement an Oak lesson or a teacher’s own lesson. Teachers can tailor content, reading age, geographical context, tasks and activities to their pupils, making it more adaptable than a fixed lesson template.

Its retrieval-augmented generation draws on Oak material created by teachers and checked by subject experts, with an emphasis on the English national curriculum. The FAQ says Aila is built to use ChatGPT-4, while Oak evaluates other models. That curriculum grounding is a strength for relevant teaching materials, but output is weaker in some subjects, particularly STEM and modern foreign languages. Aila does not currently create images or diagrams.

Aila is in beta and under active development, so Oak advises checking generated content carefully. It limits requests, lessons and resources, though users can ask for a higher limit. Users must not enter personally identifiable information; doing so breaches Oak’s terms and conditions.

Pricing

Aila is free: its Aila plan costs 0.00 USD per free. Fair-use limits may apply to excessive use, and request limits apply to lessons and resources. Teachers who need frequent generation should account for those caps rather than assume unlimited use; they can request a higher limit.

Platforms

Aila runs on the web and is available to teachers using a laptop or computer with internet access. Mobile use is not currently supported. Oak describes keyboard navigation, screen-reader and speech-recognition support, and zoom up to 400 percent across most of its website. Users can contact Oak by email for support or submit feedback and suggestions.

Who it's for

Aila is a sensible fit for teachers who want adaptable lesson materials aligned with the English national curriculum, especially when a plan, slides, quizzes and a worksheet in one editable set will save preparation time. It is a less suitable choice for teachers who depend on mobile access, need image or diagram generation, work chiefly in STEM or modern foreign languages, or require unrestricted generation. Its privacy rule also means it is not appropriate for workflows that require entering pupils’ personally identifiable information.

Pros and cons

Pros: A single lesson can produce an editable plan, slides, two quizzes and a worksheet, giving teachers a broad set of materials to refine.
Pros: Content, reading age, geographical context, tasks and activities can be adapted for pupils, and supplementary glossaries, tasks and quizzes can support Oak or teacher-created lessons.
Pros: Oak content created by teachers and checked by subject experts provides a curriculum-focused basis, particularly for the English national curriculum.
Cons: Beta status and weaker results in some subjects mean teachers need to check outputs rather than treat them as classroom-ready without review.
Cons: Request limits, no image or diagram generation, and no mobile support constrain how and where teachers can use it.
Cons: Users must not enter personally identifiable information, which rules out that kind of pupil-specific input.

Alternatives

AI Lesson Plan Generators is a useful place to compare lesson-planning options. Choose Make My Lesson if Android or iOS access matters, or if its free plan’s five generations suit your needs. Almanack is worth considering for standards-aligned planning, curriculum design and long-range planning. Common Planner may fit teachers who want daily, weekly and monthly planning or to post lessons to Google Classroom.

Eduaide offers a free tier with generation limits and lesson plans, worksheets, organizers, games and assessments; its Pro plan is 49.99 USD per year. Education Copilot may suit teachers who want core AI templates, handouts, document editing and export, with a free plan and a Pro plan at 9.00 USD per month. GradeAid offers five resources a week on its free plan, with PDF and Word export, making it an option for teachers whose needs fit that allowance. GradeWithAI is an alternative focused on AI-assisted grading. Homeroomie offers a free plan with three lesson plans per month and three worksheets per lesson, for teachers whose planning needs fit those caps.

Verdict

Choose Aila if you teach within the English national curriculum and want a free, adaptable bundle of lesson materials to review and refine. Its strongest case is the combination of curriculum-focused content and multiple editable outputs; look elsewhere if mobile access, visual resources, stronger STEM or language output, or uncapped use is essential.
