Overview

Hemingway Editor is a readability-focused writing editor for people who want to make prose clearer and more direct. Editor Plus suits writers and teams that also want AI revisions and document feedback; Classic is a better fit for offline desktop editing. Its narrow focus is useful for clarity, but AI editing brings usage quotas and sends text to an LLM provider.

Key features

Readability feedback: Hemingway scores writing and flags sentences and issues that may weaken or complicate a message. That makes it a practical revision aid when clarity matters, though it is not a substitute for broader editorial judgment.
Editor Plus AI editing: It can revise wordy sentences and passive voice, correct grammar, and adjust tone, length, and style. AI sentences are capped by plan, so heavy users should compare quotas before choosing.
Document review and file handling: Editor Plus offers document feedback, insights, and suggestions, and imports and exports Word, Markdown, and HTML. Annual individual plans include unlimited grammar fixes, document review, synonyms, and readability highlights, alongside their AI sentence quotas.
Classic desktop workflow: The offline app keeps writing on the computer, supports one-click WordPress publishing, and exports HTML or Markdown for a blogging platform or CMS. It does not include AI features, so it fits writers who value offline work over automated revision.
Privacy and hosting: Hemingway says it does not retain document content after processing or use customer writing to train AI models. For AI analysis or rewriting, text is sent through Hemingway to OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic and discarded after processing. Editor Plus uses AES-256 encryption for communications and stored database data, and is hosted in the United States; it does not have SOC 2 or ISO certification.

Pricing

The free plan is the no-cost way to use Hemingway's readability-focused editing. Choose it if you mainly want feedback to revise yourself; it does not provide the paid AI editing allowance described by the plans.

Individual 5K (annual): $8.33 USD per month, billed $100 billed annually, for one user and 5,000 AI sentences per month. It also includes unlimited grammar fixes, document review, synonyms, and readability highlights. This is the lower-cost paid choice for regular individual use.
Individual 10K (annual): $12.50 USD per month, billed $150 billed annually, for one user and 10,000 AI sentences per month, with the same listed unlimited features. It suits individuals who need more AI editing capacity.
Team 10K (annual): $12.50 USD per month, billed $150 billed annually per user, for up to 50 users, 10,000 AI sentences per user per month, shared billing, and admin roles. It is the relevant option for teams coordinating written work.
Individual 5K (monthly): $10.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for AI-assisted editing through Editor Plus. Its higher monthly price avoids an annual billing commitment; the listed offer does not specify a sentence quota.
Hemingway Editor Classic: $19.99 USD per once, a Mac or Windows offline desktop license without AI features. It suits buyers who prefer a one-time purchase and offline editing.
Enterprise: Custom pricing for unlimited users and 20,000 AI sentences per user per month, with optional SSO and priority email support.

Editor Plus has a 14-day trial. Hemingway directs support requests to support@hemingwayapp.com.

Platforms

Hemingway Editor is available on the web and for macOS and Windows. Classic is the desktop option for offline writing; Editor Plus is hosted on Render, with servers and storage in the United States.

Who it's for

Hemingway fits writers who want a focused readability check and are prepared to make their own revisions. Editor Plus also targets teams improving mass and internal communications, grants, sales proposals, and other written work. Classic is the clearer choice when keeping writing offline matters more than AI features; Hemingway is less suitable for anyone who cannot send text to an LLM provider for AI processing.

Pros and cons

Readability scores and highlights direct attention to potentially difficult passages.
Editor Plus combines AI revisions with document feedback and Word, Markdown, and HTML file workflows.
Classic offers offline editing, WordPress publishing, and HTML or Markdown export for a one-time purchase.
Annual individual plans include unlimited grammar fixes, document review, synonyms, and readability highlights.

Cons

AI editing is limited by monthly sentence quotas, so frequent use may require a larger plan.
AI processing sends document content to an LLM provider, which may rule it out for sensitive work.
Editor Plus has no SOC 2 or ISO certification, a consideration for organizations with formal compliance requirements.
Classic lacks the newer AI features, while Editor Plus is hosted rather than an offline workflow.
