Overview

Ahrefs combines core SEO research and monitoring with site audits, content discovery, AI tools, and API access. Its free plan focuses on data about your own site and fixes, while paid plans add research capacity and higher usage limits. The underlying scale is substantial by the company’s figures: its index contains 170 trillion pages, it tracks 41.9 billion keywords, and AhrefsBot crawls 8 billion pages daily. Those figures do not remove the practical limits on projects, tracked keywords, and crawl credits.

Content Explorer finds web mentions and potential link prospects, while AI Content Helper is aimed at improving content. Integrations include Ahrefs’ own, Looker Studio, and connections to AI chatbots; the platform also offers MCP access. Multilingual customer support is available five days a week, with a median first response time of 5:58 minutes.

Key features

Research, tracking, and audits

Keyword and competitor research, rank tracking, backlink analysis, and Site Audit cover the main jobs of ongoing SEO work. The database breadth may support broad research, but each paid plan still caps tracked keywords and crawl credits. Lite, for example, allows 750 tracked keywords and 100,000 crawl credits monthly, with a maximum of 25,000 pages per project. That makes the allowance more relevant than the crawler’s overall scale for teams managing large sites or many projects.

Content, AI, and integrations

Content Explorer is useful when link-building or content teams need to find mentions and prospects; AI Content Helper adds a content-improvement tool. Ask Ahrefs is free during beta on Lite and higher plans. Brand Radar starts at $199.00 USD per month for AI research and prompt tracking, while separate prompt packages start at $50.00 USD per month and charge for checks above the included quota. These add-ons make the broader feature set less straightforward to budget than a single subscription.

Pricing

Core plans

Ahrefs Free: $0.00 USD per free. It offers data on your site and help fixing issues, with limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access. It is a sensible starting point for a site owner, not a substitute for paid research capacity.
Starter: $29.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It covers keyword and competitor research. Its lower entry price suits light research, but the stated plan details do not include the higher plans’ project, tracking, or crawl quotas.
Lite: $129.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, 100,000 crawl credits monthly, and one user. A further two users can be added at $40 per month each. This is the most clearly quantified fit for a solo practitioner or small operation.
Standard: $249.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It raises capacity to 20 projects, 2,000 tracked keywords, and 500,000 crawl credits monthly. One user is included; up to five more can be added at $60 per month each. It better fits a growing workload, though additional seats raise the bill quickly.
Advanced: $449.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It allows 50 projects, 5,000 tracked keywords, and 1,500,000 crawl credits monthly. One user is included, with up to ten additional users at $80 per month each. It is aimed at larger workloads, but is a costly step up if those higher quotas are not needed.
Enterprise: $1,499.00 USD per month with an annual commitment required. It starts with three users, 10,000 tracked keywords, and 5,000,000 crawl credits monthly, and includes unlimited historical data. It also provides SSO, two-factor authentication, ISO27001 certification, access management, audit logs, and unlimited additional users. The annual commitment and higher starting price make it a fit for organizations that need scale and administration controls.

Annual payment saves up to 17%. No trial or refund policy is stated. Ask Ahrefs is free during beta on Lite and higher plans, while prompt packages have separate quotas: Basic costs $50.00 USD per month for 2,500 checks, with $0.020 per extra check; Growth costs $100.00 USD per month for 7,000 checks, with $0.015 per extra check; Scale costs $250.00 USD per month for 25,000 checks, with $0.010 per extra check. Brand Radar starts at $199.00 USD per month. These distinct charges matter for buyers planning around AI research usage.

Platforms

Ahrefs offers web tools and API access, alongside AI assistants and MCP access. Native Ahrefs and Looker Studio integrations, plus connections to AI chatbots, extend how teams can use its data. Enterprise adds security and user-administration controls; teams that do not need them can avoid paying for the top tier.

Who it's for

Ahrefs is strongest for SEO practitioners and teams that want keyword and competitor research, backlink analysis, rank tracking, and audits in one platform, with content discovery and APIs available as well. Solo users can begin with the free plan or Starter, while teams should compare seat costs and quotas before committing. It is a weaker fit for buyers who need generous collaboration at a low price or cannot predict prompt-check add-on usage.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad SEO coverage spans research, tracking, audits, and backlink analysis, reducing the need to split those core jobs across tools.
Pro: Published project, keyword, and crawl quotas make it possible to match plans to workload, and Enterprise adds substantial capacity and administration controls.
Pro: Content Explorer, AI Content Helper, and integrations extend the platform beyond conventional SEO reporting.
Con: Paid plans include only one user through Advanced, and extra seats cost $40 to $80 per month depending on plan.
Con: Quotas rise with price, so users with many projects, tracked terms, or pages may need a much more expensive tier.
Con: AI prompt tracking and research can bring separate package or Brand Radar costs on top of the core subscription.

Alternatives

Consider Moz Pro if its free trial, browser extension, or entry-level $49.00 USD monthly plan for individuals managing one site is a better match. Rankora is worth comparing for a free-forever option with one monthly audit and 50 keywords, or a $29.00 USD monthly Growth plan with 5,000 keywords and up to three competitors. Raven Tools may suit buyers comparing annual pricing and API access; its Small Biz plan is $39.00 USD per year with two domains or campaigns, two users, and 1,500 position checks.

Semrush is another freemium option to compare: its free plan includes one demo project and 10 reports per day, while its SEO plan is $117.33 USD per month. SpyFu offers a freemium alternative with a Basic plan at $39.00 USD per month, including 10,000-row search results and exports, one live site tracking project, and 5,000 weekly tracked keyword rankings. Topvisor has a free XS plan with unlimited projects and keywords, which may appeal to users prioritizing those allowances. Ubersuggest offers an Individual plan at $29.00 USD per month with a one-time seven-day free trial, one project, 125 tracked keywords per project, and 1,000 pages crawled weekly. Wranker is another freemium alternative to compare.

Verdict

Choose Ahrefs if your work depends on combining SEO research, rank monitoring, audits, and backlink analysis, and you can align its quotas and seat charges with your workload. Its breadth, data infrastructure, and content tools are compelling; the cost of added users, higher-capacity tiers, and separate AI packages are the clearest reasons to look elsewhere.
