Overview

darktable is a free, open-source raw-photo workflow application for Linux, macOS, and Windows. It is best suited to photographers who want to manage and develop images in a configurable desktop toolbox; its breadth comes with a steep learning curve.

Key features

Cataloguing and editing

darktable keeps digital negatives in a database and offers a zoomable lighttable for browsing. It imports standard, raw, and high dynamic range formats, including JPEG, CR2, NEF, HDR, PFM, and RAF. Non-destructive editing preserves the original image, making it practical to revisit adjustments without altering the source.

Masking and batch editing support selective work and repeated adjustments across images. Color management includes automatic display-profile detection on most systems and built-in ICC profiles for sRGB, Adobe RGB, XYZ, and linear RGB. Many image operations can use GPU acceleration through OpenCL, although that depends on a compatible setup.

Capture, automation, and export

Tethered shooting with live view is supported for some camera brands, not universally. Lua scripting can automate many parts of the workflow. Export options include disk storage, email attachments, Piwigo webalbums, and HTML-based web galleries; cloud sync is not supported, so this is not a built-in synchronized library for users working across devices.

Optional AI tools

Opt-in AI features are disabled by default and cover object masking, denoising, and upscaling. The Flatpak release omits these tools as of September 2026, so users who want them should choose another installation route.

Pricing

darktable costs 0.00 USD per free. The free, GPL version 3 or later application includes its raw developer and photography workflow tools, with no paid tier or free-trial period to weigh against it. There are no seat or usage quotas stated for the plan.

Platforms

darktable runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. The install page offers Windows installers and macOS disk images, and points Linux and Unix users to source, AppImage, package-manager, and Flatpak options. The provided macOS bundles require macOS 13.5 (Ventura) or later. Windows builds are not signed with a trusted code-signing certificate, so SmartScreen or Smart App Control may show warnings.

Two workflow limits matter when moving from other tools: darktable does not support DCP camera profiles, and presets from other programs are incompatible. Help is directed to the Pixls.us forum; bug reports and feature requests go to GitHub Issues.

Who it's for

Choose darktable if you want a no-cost raw workflow with database-based organization, non-destructive development, batch tools, and control over export and automation. It is less suitable if you need a gentle learning curve, DCP profile support, compatible presets from another application, cloud sync, or AI tools through Flatpak. Camera-brand coverage for tethered shooting is also limited.

Pros and cons

Pros

Free and open source, with no paid plan or trial deadline.
Database organization, non-destructive editing, masking, and batch editing bring core workflow stages together.
Multiple export destinations and Lua scripting offer flexibility for varied workflows.

Cons

The project warns that the learning curve can be steep, making it a demanding first raw editor.
No DCP profiles or cross-program preset compatibility can complicate switching workflows.
Flatpak excludes the opt-in AI features, and Windows signing warnings may add friction during installation.
No cloud sync, and tethered live view only works with some camera brands.

Verdict

darktable is a strong fit for photographers who want a capable, free raw workflow and are willing to learn a deep toolbox. Its strongest case is the combination of database organization, non-destructive development, batch editing, and flexible export without a subscription. Look elsewhere if you depend on DCP profiles, cloud sync, a shorter learning curve, or AI tools in the Flatpak build.
