Overview

Adapt Learning is free software for building responsive HTML5 learning content, with a no-code authoring tool alongside a developer framework. It is best suited to course creators who want to publish interactive lessons without programming and developers willing to manage a framework; its broad course capabilities come with a more involved setup for the latter.

Key features

The authoring tool lets non-programmers create courses, add interactive elements, preview and publish them. That gives educators and training teams a way to produce responsive learning content without first building a development workflow. The separate Adapt Framework is an extensible toolkit for developers who want to build courses directly.

Framework courses can be delivered from a web server or through a SCORM-compliant learning management system. Learner data, completion tracking, assessments, question banks, randomized questions and configurable feedback support courses where progress and knowledge checks matter, rather than just presenting material.

Localization includes multiple languages and right-to-left compatibility, useful for organizations serving learners across languages and writing systems. The framework states that it meets WAI AA accessibility standards. It includes 22 bundled plugins, and additional plugins are available through the community; the plugin browser includes SCORM tracking and xAPI extensions. This flexibility is valuable, though relying on plugins and community resources may mean more work for teams seeking a tightly managed product experience.

Developers can install the framework with Adapt-CLI, download a ZIP from GitHub or clone the repository with Git. The prerequisites—Git, Node.js and NPM, Grunt-CLI, and Adapt-CLI—make the framework a better fit for technically equipped teams than for someone seeking a ready-to-run authoring setup. Adapt points users to documentation and a technical community forum for setup help and questions. The project relies on donated collaborator time and does not publish specific release schedules, so teams that need a predictable cadence should weigh that uncertainty.

Pricing

Adapt Learning is free and open source: the Adapt Learning plan costs 0.00 USD per free. There is no paid plan or trial identified. For a budget-conscious creator, the absence of an authoring fee is a clear advantage; the trade-off is that framework setup and ongoing reliance on community support may call for technical time.

Platforms

Adapt supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, web and self-hosted use. Its responsive HTML5 output suits courses intended for multiple devices, while self-hosting and framework installation give teams options beyond a hosted web workflow.

Who it's for

Choose Adapt if you create courses without programming and want interactive, responsive output, or if you develop HTML5 learning and need an extensible framework with tracking, assessment and localization capabilities. It is less suitable for teams that cannot support the framework prerequisites or need a published release schedule.

Pros and cons

Pros

No authoring charge: The free, open-source plan makes course creation accessible without a software subscription.
Two creation paths: Non-programmers can use the authoring tool, while developers can extend the framework with plugins.
Structured learning support: SCORM delivery, completion tracking, assessments and question tools serve courses that need learner progress and evaluation.
Broad course reach: Localization, right-to-left compatibility and stated WAI AA accessibility support varied learner audiences.

Cons

Framework setup takes technical capacity: Git, Node.js and NPM, Grunt-CLI, and Adapt-CLI are prerequisites.
Uncertain release cadence: The project relies on donated collaborator time and does not publish specific release schedules.

Verdict

Adapt is a strong choice for course creators who want free, no-code authoring or developers who need responsive HTML5 courses with assessment, tracking and localization. Its chief appeal is the combination of those capabilities with an open-source, no-cost plan. Look elsewhere if framework prerequisites are beyond your team or a predictable release schedule is essential.
