Overview

Windscribe is a VPN service for people who want a free place to start or the option to buy access by location. It suits lighter users and people with specific location needs; its clearest trade-off is that only Pro removes the data cap.

Key features

Privacy: Windscribe has a verified no-logs audit, alongside a kill switch. These are meaningful privacy and connection safeguards, though they do not make capped plans suitable for every use.
Coverage: Free covers 10 countries; Pro expands access to 69+ countries and 135+ cities. That makes the free tier a narrower way to choose a location, while Pro is better for users who need broader country and city choice.
Use cases and protocol: Streaming and torrent support broaden Windscribe beyond basic browsing, and WireGuard support provides another protocol option. The plan limits still matter: Free and Build-A-Plan have data quotas, while Pro is unlimited.

Pricing

Windscribe's free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, billed Free forever. It allows 2 GB per month without a confirmed email, or 10 GB/month across 10 countries. That is a useful no-cost starting point, but the allowance is restrictive for regular streaming or other data-heavy use.

Build-A-Plan costs 1.00 USD per month per location, with a $3 minimum monthly purchase and up to 7 locations. Each location includes 10 GB per location. It can suit someone who needs only a few chosen locations, but the minimum purchase and per-location cap make it less compelling for broad or heavy use.

Pro Monthly costs 9.00 USD per month, billed monthly. Pro Yearly costs 69.00 USD per year, billed yearly. Both include unlimited data, 69+ countries and 135+ cities. Monthly suits users who want the same coverage without an annual term; yearly is the lower stated cost over a year for users ready to commit. Neither Pro option is a limited-data bargain plan: the step up is for unlimited use and wider coverage.

Platforms

Windscribe supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, giving users a choice across desktop and mobile systems.

Who it's for

Windscribe is a strong fit for users who want to try a VPN without paying, need streaming or torrent support, or want to pay for a small set of locations rather than take Pro immediately. Choose Pro if monthly data limits would get in the way or if broad country and city coverage matters. It is a weaker fit for someone who needs unlimited data but does not want a Pro subscription.

Pros and cons

Pros: A free tier and per-location plan offer more than one way to begin without buying a full Pro subscription.
Pros: Pro combines unlimited data with access to 69+ countries and 135+ cities, useful for people who need both volume and location choice.
Pros: A verified no-logs audit, kill switch, WireGuard support, and streaming and torrent support cover several concrete privacy and usage priorities.
Cons: Free is limited to 2 GB per month without a confirmed email, or 10 GB/month, and only 10 countries; sustained use may require an upgrade.
Cons: Build-A-Plan has a $3 minimum monthly purchase and caps each location at 10 GB, so it is not a route to unlimited use.
Cons: Pro Monthly costs 9.00 USD per month, a substantial step up from the location-based entry option for users who only need a little data.

Alternatives

Proton VPN is worth considering if unlimited data on a free plan matters more than Windscribe's location-based plan: Proton Free includes unlimited data, one device at a time and 10 countries.

Hotspot Shield may suit someone who prefers a daily free allowance; its Basic plan includes 500 MB daily data, one device, one U.S. virtual location and 2 Mbps.

hide.me is another freemium option for readers comparing VPN services with support across web, desktop and mobile platforms.

TunnelBear offers a free plan with 2 GB secure browsing and an Unlimited plan at 3.33 USD per month, making it another option for readers weighing a capped free tier against unlimited browsing.

Amnezia VPN is an alternative for readers who value open-source clients and servers.

PrivadoVPN offers a free plan with 10 GB data on one device, an alternative for users comparing free allowances.

iTop VPN is another freemium VPN option.

Bitdefender Premium VPN is an alternative to compare for readers considering VPN subscriptions.

Verdict

Choose Windscribe if you want a free entry point, flexible location-based buying or Pro coverage with unlimited data and broad country and city choice. Its main drawback is the gap between capped lower-cost options and the 9.00 USD per month Pro Monthly plan; users who need unlimited data without that subscription should compare alternatives such as Proton VPN's free tier.
