What Wowza Streaming Engine is

Wowza Streaming Engine is paid server software for delivering live and on-demand video and audio to devices. It can run on your own hardware, on a major cloud provider through a preconfigured virtual machine, or in a fully offline, air-gapped setup. Supported protocols include HLS, MPEG-DASH, CMAF, WebRTC, RTSP/RTP, RTMP, MPEG-TS, and SRT, with SRT ingest available. The Transcoder performs real-time video transcoding and transrating, producing multiple synchronized-keyframe outputs from one input stream. Live streams can be recorded to VOD files while viewers play, pause, resume, or rewind. REST APIs configure, manage, and monitor the server, while a Java API supports custom Java classes. Integration options include client SDKs, webhooks, custom Java modules, HTTP providers, and an MCP server. Security controls include authentication, IP restrictions, SSL/TLS, DRM integrations, and SecureToken playback protection. SecureToken is not supported by the current 4.11 WebRTC implementation; the documentation recommends basic authentication there. Basic Monthly pricing is $195 a month.

Verdict

Wowza Streaming Engine offers configurable streaming infrastructure with extensive protocols, APIs, transcoding, and recording. Its paid plans and channel limits matter, and WebRTC deployments need another authentication method instead of SecureToken.
