Watir Free Open source Ruby library for browser automation watir.com · 3 Oct 2026

What it does: Watir is an open source Ruby library for automating web browser tests by interacting with pages and checking results.
Browser interactions: Watir can click links, fill out forms, and validate text in a browser.
Browser coverage: The project guides list Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Edge as supported browsers.
Element handling: The guides cover locating elements and working with buttons, check boxes, dropdowns, frames, links, radio buttons, and text inputs.
Advanced capabilities: The guides include automatic waits, headless use, mobile testing, authentication, certificates, proxies, cookies, alerts, and screenshots.
Integrations: The Watir ecosystem lists watir-rails for Rails and watir-rspec for RSpec.
Support: Watir is maintained by volunteers; the project directs users with reproducible problems to submit an issue or pull request and users with general questions to Stack Overflow.
Download limitation: Watir cannot handle operating system file dialogs, and browser downloads on a remote machine are saved on that machine rather than the machine running the Ruby code.
Intended audience: The project describes Watir as ideally suited for people getting started in test automation.
Security and compliance: The maker pages reviewed do not state security certifications or compliance claims.
