What stemflow is

stemflow is a free Python toolkit for Adaptive Spatio-Temporal Exploratory Models (AdaSTEM), intended for large spatiotemporal datasets such as daily abundance estimation from eBird surveys. It divides data into spatial or spatiotemporal cells using Quadtree or Sphere Quadtree indexing, trains a model for each cell, and combines results into ensemble predictions. Supported tasks include binary classification, regression, hurdle modeling for zero-inflated data, and spatial-only modeling. You can define two-dimensional spatial indexes with coordinate reference systems, three-dimensional spherical indexes, and temporal indexes. The toolkit accepts pandas DataFrames, DuckDB files, and Parquet files, and works with continuous, categorical, static, and dynamic features. Base models can use scikit-learn-style estimators or a scikit-learn-style Maxent model. It calculates overall feature importance and plots spatiotemporal dynamics. Lazy loading and database queries help manage memory during parallel work, while SphereAdaSTEM provides an interactive Plotly gridding plot by default. Installation options include pip, conda, and a GitHub beta command.

Who it suits

It suits Python users modeling ecological or other large spatiotemporal datasets. It is also relevant to researchers who need customizable spatial and temporal indexing.

What it does well

  • Supports classification, regression, and hurdle modeling
  • Imports pandas, DuckDB, and Parquet data
  • Offers customizable spatial and temporal indexing
  • Includes feature importance and interactive plots

What to know first

  • May consume substantial computational resources
  • Desktop deployment only
  • Requires Python-based workflows

Verdict

stemflow combines flexible AdaSTEM modeling with broad indexing, data, and visualization support. Its resource demands and Python focus matter when planning larger workloads.
