Passage

What Passage is
Passage is free, open-source password-store software for Linux and macOS. It is a fork of password-store that uses age instead of GnuPG as its encryption backend. The default local store is `$HOME/.passage/store`. For encryption, Passage uses the nearest `.age-recipients` file when available; decryption normally uses age identities from `$HOME/.passage/identities`. Documented setups include an age key on disk, a password-protected age key, and age-plugin-yubikey. The YubiKey procedure requires age v1.1.0 or rage together with the PIV plugin age-plugin-yubikey, and recovery keys are recommended if a YubiKey is lost. An example fzf script provides fuzzy selection of secrets. Passage searches for extensions under `$HOME/.passage/extensions`; password-store extensions can support it by switching on the `PASSAGE` variable. Installation instructions cover `make install` and macOS Homebrew. A migration script moves secrets from pass, and password-store environment variables remain supported. The project is licensed under GPL version 2 or later. The latest listed release is 1.7.4a0.
Who it suits
It suits Linux and macOS users who want local password storage with age-based encryption. It also fits setups using password-store extensions, fzf search, or YubiKey identities.
What it does well
- Uses age instead of GnuPG
- Stores passwords locally by default
- Supports password-protected keys and YubiKey
- Includes fzf search integration
- Provides migration from pass
What to know first
- The init command is not currently available
- Moving or copying a secret always re-encrypts it
- YubiKey setup requires additional age components
- Supports Linux and macOS only
Verdict
Passage offers a password-store workflow with age encryption, local files, extensions, and optional YubiKey integration. Its unavailable init command and re-encryption behavior are key operational limitations.
