Momento

What Momento is
Momento is a free, open-source game recorder for 64-bit Windows 10 version 1903 or newer and Windows 11. It watches a configurable list of games and starts recording when a matching game window appears. Capture uses Windows Graphics Capture and can include microphone and system audio. Recordings stay on the computer in MKV format; the built-in editor can browse, search, preview, repair, and trim clips, then export them as MP4 without re-encoding. A configurable bookmark hotkey defaults to F8.
The standard public build has no account, telemetry, analytics, advertising, automatic uploads, or cloud library. Optional YouTube uploads require users to create a Google Cloud Desktop OAuth client and import its JSON file. The imported client details and account token are stored separately in DPAPI-encrypted files. Installed builds check GitHub Releases at startup and verify signed release metadata, installer size, and SHA-256 before accepting updates. The app uses about 300 MB of installed disk space, with additional room needed for recordings. At default settings of 60 fps and 16,000 kbit/s, recordings use about 7.2 GB per hour before audio and container overhead. Momento does not provide replay buffering, streaming, webcam capture, or HDR recording.
Who it suits
Momento suits Windows users who want game recordings stored locally and a built-in way to manage and export clips. It is also a fit for users who want an open-source recorder and can create their own Google Cloud OAuth client if they need YouTube uploads.
What it does well
- Free and licensed under GPL-3.0-only.
- Automatically records games from a configurable list.
- Captures microphone and system audio.
- Edits and exports MP4 clips without re-encoding.
- Stores recordings and clips on the computer.
What to know first
- Available for 64-bit Windows only.
- No replay buffer, streaming, webcam capture, or HDR recording.
- The installer is not code-signed.
- Live recordings cannot be previewed or edited before finalization.
Limits
Momento is free and has a free plan. YouTube uploads may be limited to private visibility when using an unverified API project created after July 28, 2020, until that project passes Google's API audit.
