KubeFleet

What KubeFleet is
KubeFleet is an open-source, self-hosted control plane for deploying and managing Kubernetes resources across multiple clusters. A fleet consists of a hub cluster that coordinates deployments and member clusters whose agents retrieve resource manifests from the hub. Because members use a pull-based connection, they can take part with outbound network access even if they cannot receive connections from the hub.
Placement policies route resources according to scheduling rules, including region and release stage. KubeFleet can roll out changes progressively, enforce policies, monitor status, detect configuration drift, and move resources between clusters. It works with supported Kubernetes versions on public clouds, on-premises infrastructure, and local kind clusters. Its documentation describes use with groups ranging from smaller environments to hundreds of clusters and thousands of nodes.
When a member joins, its service account permissions are confined to a namespace reserved for that member cluster. KubeFleet's placement APIs can also be used with Kueue to schedule AI and machine learning workloads across a fleet. The project is a Cloud Native Computing Foundation sandbox project; questions, feedback, and bug reports are directed to GitHub discussions and issues.
Who it suits
KubeFleet suits teams that need to deploy and coordinate Kubernetes resources across multiple clusters, with rules for placement and staged changes. It is also relevant where member clusters have outbound-only connectivity or where AI and machine learning workloads are scheduled with Kueue.
What it does well
- Routes resources by placement rules such as region and release stage.
- Supports progressive rollouts across member clusters.
- Detects configuration drift and provides status observation.
- Member agents can work without inbound network access.
- Supports supported Kubernetes clusters across cloud, on-premises, and kind environments.
What to know first
- The kind quickstart requires Docker, kind, and Helm.
- It is self-hosted and requires a hub cluster plus member clusters.
Getting started
- Visit the KubeFleet website for project information.
- Prepare a hub cluster and the member clusters for the fleet.
- For the kind quickstart, install Docker, kind, and Helm.
- Configure placement policies to direct resources to member clusters.
- Use GitHub discussions or issues for questions, feedback, and bug reports.
Verdict
Choose KubeFleet to coordinate Kubernetes resources across a fleet, particularly when placement rules, progressive rollouts, or outbound-only member connectivity matter. Teams seeking a hosted deployment should look elsewhere, as KubeFleet is self-hosted.
Questions
How much does KubeFleet cost?
KubeFleet is free and open source.
Where can KubeFleet run?
It works with supported Kubernetes versions on public clouds, on-premises, or locally with kind.
Can member clusters work without inbound access?
Yes. Member agents pull manifests from the hub, so outbound network access can be sufficient.
How does KubeFleet schedule resources?
Placement policies target clusters using rules that can include region and release stage.
Can KubeFleet support AI and machine learning workloads?
Its placement APIs can be combined with Kueue to schedule AI and machine learning workloads across a fleet.
Who maintains KubeFleet?
It is a Cloud Native Computing Foundation sandbox project.
