Overview

The product brings proposals, reviews, approvals, and academic changes into a shared governance process. Its configurable forms cover courses, programs, policies, and other changes, while routing can follow institutional approval structures. That makes it a stronger fit for formal, multi-stage review than for organizations that only need a basic catalog editor.

Lifecycle tracking helps teams follow approvals, bottlenecks, and outstanding work. Reviewers can also see prerequisites, corequisites, program relationships, and other dependencies, giving decision-makers useful context for assessing the impact of a proposed change.

Key features

Configurable governance

Institutions can shape forms and route proposals to faculty, committees, and academic leaders according to policy. This flexibility suits varied processes across departments, but organizations with simple approval paths may not need this level of workflow design.

Embedded AI

Natural-language prompts can create or modify workflows, change forms or approval processes, refine proposal content, and identify stalled proposals. These tools target workflow administration as well as proposal handling; the product does not publish specific limits or usage terms for them.

Connected curriculum and campus systems

Approved curriculum can flow into Kuali Catalog, and approved course information can connect with Kuali Syllabus Management, reducing re-entry between those products. Kuali describes its platform as API-first, with REST and GraphQL APIs for campus-system connections. API access is included as a product capability, though institutions will need to assess fit with their own systems.

Security and administration

Kuali says data is encrypted in transit and at rest, with configurable roles and permissions. It supports federated single sign-on and multi-factor authentication through customer identity providers, and performs snapshot backups at least daily. Its Trust Center says an independent SOC 2 assessment applies to select products, evaluating security, availability, and confidentiality controls; that assessment should not be taken as applying to every product. Deleted data is retained until a customer requests permanent deletion through the support portal.

Pricing

Kuali Curriculum Management is paid software with custom pricing. Institutions must schedule a demo to learn pricing; the product does not offer a stated free plan or free trial. That sales-led process may suit institutions evaluating governance software with multiple stakeholders, but it gives smaller teams no public price for an initial budget comparison. Kuali says implementation and product support are handled in-house by its team.

Platforms

The product is available on web and through an API. It also supports LMS integrations, though specific LMS products are not identified.

Who it's for

This is aimed at higher education institutions coordinating curriculum processes across faculty, departments, registrars, committees, and academic leadership. It is most compelling when approval paths are formal or vary by proposal type, and when teams need a shared view of proposals and dependencies. Institutions looking for a simple course-level tool, a public price, or a self-serve trial may prefer a different approach.

Pros and cons

Pro: Configurable forms and policy-based routing can accommodate proposals across courses, programs, policies, and other academic changes.
Pro: Lifecycle tracking and dependency views help reviewers monitor outstanding work and understand the wider consequences of a proposal.
Pro: Approved curriculum can connect to Kuali Catalog and Kuali Syllabus Management, while APIs support connections with campus systems.
Con: Custom pricing and a demo-first path make it harder to assess cost or try the product independently.
Con: Permanent deletion requires a support request, a consideration for institutions with specific data-retention procedures.

Alternatives

For a narrower curriculum-management comparison, start with Curriculum Management Software. Institutions comparing tools for grants and research administration can review Research Administration Software; schools evaluating financial operations can browse School Accounting Software.

Verdict

Kuali Curriculum Management is a strong fit for higher education institutions that need configurable proposal governance, approval tracking, and connected catalog updates. Choose it for formal, cross-campus curriculum processes; look elsewhere if public pricing, a self-serve trial, or a simpler workflow is central to your decision.
