gStrings

What gStrings is

gStrings is an Android chromatic tuner that measures the pitch and intensity of sound. It can tune violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, piano, wind instruments, and voice. Users can select a target tone automatically or choose one manually, and can create custom instruments in the app. Built-in and user-defined tunings and temperaments accommodate different setups. Orchestra tuning lets users shift or redefine tone frequencies, and a pitch pipe is included. The app also supports alternate tunings and a custom reference pitch, and it works offline. The maker offers an ad-supported free version and a paid version, and says their functionality is the same. The listed free plan costs nothing. The maker says it does not process personal information for its own purposes, though AdMob may collect information to serve ads; the maker also says personal information collected by its advertising partner is shared with advertising partners. The Google Play listing names Szabolcs Vrbos as developer and gives [email protected] for support. Waves, another product from the maker, is described as deprecated.

Who it suits

gStrings suits musicians and singers who need an Android tuner for a range of instruments, voice, or custom setups. It is also a fit for users who want alternate tunings, manual tone selection, or offline tuning.

Limits

The free version is ad-supported. The maker says it has the same functionality as the paid version; no additional free-plan limits are given.

2. Install gStrings on an Android device.
3. Choose the ad-supported free version or the paid version.

Verdict

Choose gStrings if you want an Android chromatic tuner with broad instrument support, custom tuning options, and offline use. Look elsewhere if you need a strobe display, intonation monitoring, or a platform other than Android.
