FIFE

What FIFE is
FIFE is a free, open-source C++ game engine with Python bindings for building games in either language. It targets Windows, Linux and macOS and can be self-hosted, with a focus on isometric or top-down real-time strategy and role-playing games. Graphics features include GPU-accelerated 2D rendering, image atlases, dynamic lighting, fog of war, and SDL or OpenGL renderers. Maps support XML, square or hexagonal grids, multiple layers and views, and a built-in editor. Audio handles Ogg Vorbis, large-file streaming, positional audio, effects and music. Mouse, keyboard and joystick events are supported, along with interchangeable pathfinding backends and multi-cell pathfinding. The engine includes a virtual filesystem with ZIP support and lazy loading, map-editing plugins with undo and redo, and a Qt image-atlas creator. FifeChan is the default lightweight GUI backend, with CEGUI also supported. FIFE is licensed under LGPL v2.1 or newer, and commercial games can be created without a fee. It has no networking code for multiplayer. Documentation includes manuals, API references and tutorials; the latest listed release is 0.4.3.
Who it suits
It suits developers building single-player RTS or RPG projects with isometric or top-down views. Some programming experience helps, especially for extending the engine in C++ or Python.
