BayesFlow

What BayesFlow is
BayesFlow is a free, MIT-licensed Python library for simulation-based amortized Bayesian inference with neural networks. It trains on simulated datasets to produce posterior samples, likelihoods, likelihood ratios, point estimates, and model probabilities. Its workflows cover posterior, likelihood, ratio, point, and model-comparison estimation. The workflow links generative models, data adapters, summary and inference networks, training strategies, and simulation-based diagnostics. Listed generative models include diffusion and consistency models, while documented defaults help inspect inference results. BayesFlow uses Keras 3 with JAX, PyTorch, or TensorFlow backends; one of these backends must be installed separately. Its simulator, adapter, summary network, inference network, and training strategy can be changed independently. Optional integrations add Mamba summary networks through mamba-ssm and let trained ratio or continuous approximators act as likelihood terms in PyMC, although that PyMC connection currently supports only JAX. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows with self-hosted desktop deployment.
Who it suits
BayesFlow suits developers and science or research users building simulation-based Bayesian inference workflows in Python. It is intended for teams comfortable installing and managing a machine-learning backend.
What it does well
- Free plan and MIT license
- Supports JAX, PyTorch, and TensorFlow
- Multiple Bayesian inference workflows
- Configurable modular components
- Runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows
What to know first
- Requires a separately installed machine-learning backend
- PyMC integration supports JAX only
- No statistical tests or regression models
- No free trial
Verdict
BayesFlow focuses on neural, simulation-based Bayesian inference with modular workflows and several backend choices. Check the separate backend requirement and JAX-only PyMC support before adopting it.
