Overview

ABB positions MES to give operators, supervisors, production engineers and plant managers operational information intended to improve productivity, quality and flexibility. Work order management, lot and serial traceability, shop-floor data capture and real-time dashboards address core execution needs. The range of production, quality and equipment functions makes it relevant across discrete manufacturing and process industries, though the breadth may be more than a smaller operation needs.

Key features

Production coordination and connectivity

Production-order management handles order and production buffers, workflow and automatic routing from ERP. Out-of-the-box connectivity includes SAP, ERP LN, Baan, IBM Maximo and other ERP systems, with interfaces such as ODBC, OLE DB, web services, XML, OPC and TCP/IP. That combination can help connect planning and execution in plants with established enterprise systems. ABB also names scanners and printers, scales, automated guided vehicles, PLC-based equipment and Siemens automated production lines among supported equipment connections.

Scheduling and quality

Scheduling uses ISA-95 and B2MML data exchange and offers visual Gantt-chart planning in manual or automatic modes. This gives production teams a structured way to plan and adjust schedules, while allowing different degrees of automation. Quality functions cover parameter management, manual or automatic data collection, test certificates, in-process controls, tolerance validation, non-conformity reporting and checklists. That is a substantial quality-management scope for manufacturers that need production checks and records within execution workflows.

Security and regulated industries

ABB describes cybersecurity as part of its operations-management portfolio. Its pharmaceutical and life sciences MES/MOM solutions are described as full-scope solutions according to GAMP5 and FDA 21 CFR Part 11. Those points make the product worth considering in regulated environments, but they do not establish that every deployment or module meets a particular site's requirements.

Pricing

ABB Manufacturing Execution System (MES): custom pricing. ABB uses a paid model and handles pricing and purchase inquiries directly or through channel partners. No plan price or seat, usage or trial terms are available to compare, so buyers should request a quote and confirm the scope and commercial terms for their deployment. This inquiry-led approach suits organizations planning a substantial manufacturing system, but makes early budget comparison harder.

Platforms

ABB lists Android, iOS, web, Windows and API support. The interface list includes REST API, .NET SDK, OData, ODBC, OPC UA and OPC DA for ABB's pulp and paper process data management offering; those interfaces should not be assumed to apply uniformly to every MES deployment.

Who it's for

ABB is a strong fit for manufacturers seeking ERP-linked order execution, scheduling, traceability, shop-floor capture and quality control in one operations-management context. Its stated industry applications span discrete manufacturing, food and beverage, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and life sciences, metals, mining, oil and gas, and pulp and paper. Organizations with a defined integration and compliance scope should assess it with ABB; teams seeking transparent self-service pricing or a narrowly focused tool may prefer to compare alternatives first.

Pros and cons

Pros: ERP and equipment connectivity spans a broad range of systems and shop-floor hardware, supporting plants with varied production assets.
Pros: Scheduling combines visual Gantt planning with manual and automatic modes, giving production teams flexibility in how they plan.
Pros: Quality functions include in-process controls, tolerance validation and non-conformity reporting, which can bring inspection activity into production execution.
Cons: Pricing is by inquiry, so teams cannot quickly compare a published plan against their budget.
Cons: The wide operational scope may be unnecessary for organizations that only need a focused MES capability.

Alternatives

For a broader shortlist, browse Manufacturing Execution Systems or Overall Equipment Effectiveness Software. Consider GE Vernova Proficy Plant Applications if a hosted or on-premises mix for process, discrete and mixed manufacturing is a priority. NETVIBES is worth comparing if a free plan and free trial matter, while its Enterprise Data Science plan lists 17 portfolio roles.

FactoryLogix is another paid option with API, self-hosted, web and Windows platforms; Leading2Lean Smart Manufacturing Platform is a paid alternative with web, desktop and mobile platforms. Choose MES AI if a free plan is the deciding factor. Plex MES may appeal to buyers seeking an annual subscription with unlimited users and machines, no overage charges and no data-transfer limit. Aptean Industrial Manufacturing ERP Traverse Edition is a paid option with a free trial and pricing on request. Honeywell Enterprise Browser is another paid option for Windows and Android.

Verdict

Choose ABB MES if your operation needs production coordination tied to ERP, plant equipment, scheduling and quality processes, particularly across varied or regulated industries. Its main advantage is the breadth of those execution capabilities and connections; its main drawback for early-stage evaluation is inquiry-led pricing and purchasing. Smaller teams or buyers who need a clear published price should compare alternatives before committing to a vendor discussion.
