First, open the Windows Camera app and check whether it shows a live image. If it does not, troubleshoot Windows, the webcam, or its connection; if it does, focus on Zoom’s camera selection, permissions, or another app using the camera. This quick test helps you avoid reinstalling Zoom or drivers when the problem is simply the wrong camera selected.
These steps apply to the Zoom desktop app on Windows 11 and Windows 10. Menu names can vary slightly by Windows or Zoom version.
Start with a quick diagnosis

To run the test, close Zoom, select Start, type Camera, and open the Windows Camera app. If it shows a live preview, Windows can access the webcam at that moment. If it cannot, fix the Windows or device issue first. Microsoft recommends testing the camera in another app to help distinguish a Windows-wide problem from an app-specific one (Microsoft’s Windows camera troubleshooting guide).

1. Check the webcam’s physical controls and connection
- Open the laptop’s privacy shutter, if it has one. Check that the lens is not covered by tape, a case, or a monitor accessory.
- Look for a camera-disable key or switch. Some laptops use a function key, often with Fn, or a dedicated side button.
- For a USB webcam, unplug it and reconnect it. Try another USB port, preferably one directly on the computer rather than an unpowered hub.
- If possible, test the webcam on another computer. If it fails there too, the camera or cable may be faulty.
A physical shutter can leave the camera detected but produce a black image; a disabled key or loose USB connection can prevent Windows from seeing it at all.

2. Allow camera access in Windows
Zoom’s downloaded desktop app may not appear as a named app in Windows’ per-app list. Make sure desktop apps are allowed to use the camera.
Windows 11
Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Turn on:
- Camera access
- Let apps access your camera
- Let desktop apps access your camera
Windows 10
Go to Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera. Turn on Allow access to the camera on this device, Allow apps to access your camera, and Allow desktop apps to access your camera, where shown. Microsoft documents these settings and explains the desktop-app permission in its camera permissions guide.

If a setting is greyed out, a work or school administrator may control it through policy. Contact your organization’s IT team rather than repeatedly reinstalling Zoom or trying to override the setting.

3. Select and test the camera in Zoom
- Open the Zoom desktop app and select Settings.
- Choose Video.
- Open the camera selector below the preview and choose the webcam you intend to use—especially if you have an external camera or virtual camera installed.
- Check whether a live image appears and stays steady.
Use Zoom’s video test before a meeting, or its current pre-meeting video test flow, to confirm the selected device works locally. This is not a network test: if the local preview is black or absent, first investigate the camera, permissions, driver, or an app conflict. Zoom’s instructions for testing video describe the available testing options.
4. Close other apps that may be using the camera
Quit Microsoft Teams, Skype, Discord, OBS, browser tabs using Google Meet, Windows Camera, manufacturer camera utilities, and virtual-camera software. Some webcams or applications do not switch cleanly when another process has already opened the camera.
Then fully exit and reopen Zoom. If an app appears stuck, right-click the taskbar, open Task Manager, select the relevant app, and choose End task. Avoid ending unfamiliar Windows processes.

- Black preview: confirm the shutter is open, the lens is unobstructed, and Zoom has the right camera selected. Try Windows Camera to see whether the black image occurs outside Zoom too.
- Camera works in Camera but not Zoom: recheck Windows’ desktop-app permission, close competing apps, and select the camera again in Zoom.
- Freezes or crashes: note whether it happens only after joining a meeting. Close camera utilities and virtual cameras, restart Windows, and update the webcam driver. If the issue persists only in Zoom, update or reinstall Zoom.
- Security software: look in your antivirus or endpoint-security app for webcam protection, privacy, or application-control settings and allow Zoom if appropriate. If permitted, briefly pause only the relevant protection to test, then turn it back on. Do not leave antivirus disabled.
Microsoft lists hardware, drivers, obstruction, lighting, and other apps as possible causes of camera problems. Zoom also has separate guidance for black-screen video and video freezing or crashing.

6. Restart Windows, then check for updates
Exit Zoom and restart Windows; waking a laptop from sleep is not the same troubleshooting step. For a USB camera, disconnect it during shutdown and reconnect it after Windows starts. Test the camera in Windows Camera first, then in Zoom.
Check Windows Update:
- Windows 11: Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Also check Advanced options > Optional updates for camera or other hardware drivers, if available. Restart after installing updates.
7. Check the camera in Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Look under Cameras or, on some PCs, Imaging devices. USB cameras may appear in other device categories.
- If the webcam is disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device. If the menu says Disable device, it is already enabled.
- Right-click the camera and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Windows may not find a newer driver. If you need a manufacturer-specific driver, use the computer or webcam maker’s official support page—not a third-party driver-updater site.
8. Reinstall or roll back the camera driver
If updating does not help, first note the webcam model and, for a manufacturer-specific device, find the maker’s current support package. On a managed work PC, check with IT before removing a driver.

- In Device Manager, expand Cameras (or the category containing the webcam).
- Right-click the webcam, choose Properties, and open the Driver tab.
- Choose Uninstall Device. If Windows offers an option to remove the driver, understand that this may remove the installed package.
- Restart Windows. If the camera does not return, use Device Manager > Action > Scan for hardware changes.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the camera’s Properties > Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver, if available. Windows may not have a previous driver stored, so the button can be unavailable.
Try Microsoft’s generic USB camera driver
For some USB webcams, switching to the built-in USB Video Device driver can restore basic detection. In Device Manager, right-click the camera and choose Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers. If USB Video Device is offered, select it, install it, and restart. This can cost you maker-specific features such as HDR, autofocus controls, framing, firmware management, or Windows Hello support. Microsoft describes this option in its guidance for error 0xA00F4244, “NoCamerasAreAttached”.

If Windows Camera shows a live image but Zoom still cannot use the webcam, quit Zoom, restart Windows, and update the Zoom desktop app through its official channel. If that does not help:
- Uninstall Zoom.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current supported desktop client from Zoom’s official download page.
- Open Zoom’s video settings and test the camera before a meeting.
Reinstalling Zoom is a reasonable later step for an app-specific problem; it will not repair a broken camera, blocked Windows permission, or company policy. Zoom recommends checking the camera and drivers and, for persistent video freezing or crashes, restarting and reinstalling the app (Zoom video troubleshooting).

What camera error codes can tell you
Windows codes such as 0xA00F4244 (often shown with “NoCamerasAreAttached”) can point toward detection or driver issues; other camera errors may involve an app, permissions, or policy. A code is a clue, not proof of a single cause. Follow the matching branch above, and use Microsoft’s camera error and troubleshooting guidance for the code shown on your PC.
If the camera is missing from Device Manager, fails in Windows Camera, and also fails on another computer, hardware or cable failure becomes more likely. If it is missing only on a work-managed PC or camera permissions are greyed out, ask IT to check policy before replacing hardware.
Windows 10 and Zoom support
Microsoft ended ordinary Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to function, but Microsoft no longer provides ordinary free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that release. This does not mean Zoom immediately stopped working on every Windows 10 PC. Zoom’s separate notice concerns Zoom Rooms on Windows 10 Retail/GAC, with the last supported version expected in September 2026; it should not be read as a blanket end date for the regular Zoom Workplace desktop app (Zoom Rooms notice).
