Its official transition notice directed existing subscribers to use CyberGhost apps, making CyberGhost the continuation route for ZenMate users—not a separate replacement to compare against. If you are choosing a VPN today, pick based on whether you need a free plan, predictable monthly billing, many device connections, or streaming features.
What happened to ZenMate?
ZenMate’s official transition announcement said service would move to CyberGhost’s mobile and desktop apps from March 16, 2023, that ZenMate would stop offering new accounts and subscriptions from that date, and that its VPN apps would be supported until May 1, 2023. The notice described CyberGhost as the way for existing customers to continue using the service.
ZenMate’s homepage and order page still show product marketing, including a CyberGhost offer, but those pages do not override the dated transition notice. Treat older ZenMate product descriptions as historical rather than evidence that new ZenMate subscriptions are available now.
What should existing ZenMate subscribers do?
The transition FAQ distinguishes subscriptions by where they were purchased. App Store and Google Play subscribers were directed to CyberGhost apps; ZenMate said auto-renewal would not be available for those subscriptions. Direct ZenMate subscribers retained their ZenMate account and billing relationship while using CyberGhost apps. Check your account and the original billing provider for your own renewal and payment status, because the outcome depends on the purchase channel and subscription.

Which ZenMate alternative fits your needs?
For a free plan without a data or time limit: Proton VPN
Proton VPN says its free plan has no data cap or time limit and permits one VPN connection. It does not guarantee access to streaming services on the free plan; Proton says streaming guarantees are included with paid plans. These are Proton’s published plan terms, not independent performance or unblocking test results. Check the current plan page for availability and terms where you live.

For a flat monthly rate: Mullvad
Mullvad’s pricing page listed €5 per month, including VAT, whether paying monthly or topping up for a longer period, and support for up to five devices. It also listed a 14-day money-back guarantee, except for cash payments. These are provider-published terms retrieved September 30, 2026; check the current pricing page for your market and the applicable payment and refund conditions.
Mullvad argues on its pricing page that free services can carry costs such as advertising, data collection, or limited functionality. That is the provider’s stated perspective, not a universal finding about every free VPN; compare a free plan’s published limits with what you need.

For streaming: compare plan terms, then verify for your services
ZenMate’s transition notice described CyberGhost servers optimized for streaming, while Proton says streaming access is guaranteed only on paid plans. Those are provider claims, not recent independent tests. Access can change and may vary by country and streaming service, so check the current provider terms and your service’s availability in your region before relying on a VPN for streaming.

Can a VPN cover devices through your router?
ZenMate support documents an OpenVPN client setup for a DD-WRT-compatible router, but that dated guide is specific to ZenMate and does not establish that another provider supports the same setup. If you need VPN coverage for devices connected to your home network, first confirm that the VPN provider supports router configuration and that its setup instructions match your router model and firmware. ZenMate’s guide is available at its router setup article.

How to choose without mixing up prices or promises
- Decide whether you need a free plan, one predictable monthly charge, connections for many devices, or streaming support.
- Check the provider’s current terms in your country. Currency, taxes, plan availability, billing periods, and promotions can differ by region and date.
- Read the renewal and refund terms for your purchase channel before paying, especially if you subscribe through an app store.
- Treat connection limits and streaming claims as plan terms from the provider, not proof of speed, privacy, or reliable access in every situation.
