Zen Browser 1.12.3b is a genuine stable-channel release, published on May 8, 2025. It was a small bug-fix update, not a major feature release. It is no longer current: as of August 16, 2026, Zen’s official release notes list later stable builds, including 1.21.8b from July 17, 2026. For everyday browsing, install a current version; use 1.12.3b only when you specifically need that historical build.
What is Zen Browser 1.12.3b?
Zen Browser 1.12.3b is an archived release published in the official zen-browser/desktop GitHub repository. The release page labels it “Zen Stable Release” and describes it as a small bug-fix update. “Stable” identifies its release channel at the time; it does not mean this is still the recommended or latest version.
Zen is a Firefox-based browser, according to its official desktop repository. The 1.12.3b notes do not announce a major new feature, performance benchmark, new browser engine, or security overhaul.

The official release notes list these fixes:
- Corrected toast notification alignment when tabs are positioned on the right.
- Fixed some cases in which restoring the previous tab did not work.
- Corrected compact mode so it no longer incorrectly indicates that a background tab was added.
- Included other small fixes and improvements.
In short, this version addressed a few interface and tab-behavior problems. The notes do not describe it as a major redesign or identify specific security fixes.

Is 1.12.3b the latest Zen version?
No. The official release notes list later stable releases, including 1.21.8b, dated July 17, 2026. As of August 16, 2026, 1.12.3b is more than a year old and has been superseded by many later builds. Do not treat it as current simply because an old release page or download result appears in search.
Should you install it?
For a fresh installation or everyday browsing, choose a current official Zen build instead. Browsers rely on ongoing browser-engine maintenance and updates; the fact that 1.12.3b was officially published does not establish that it has all later fixes. The release notes do not identify a particular vulnerability in this version, so there is no basis here to call it inherently unsafe—but it is old and superseded.
An archived copy can make sense if you need to reproduce a bug, test an extension or configuration against that exact build, compare behavior before and after an update, or maintain a controlled offline software image. If that is your use case, isolate the test and verify the download as described below.

The authoritative source for 1.12.3b is its official GitHub release page. Its assets include the following categories:

The release page supplies SHA-256 checksums for its listed assets. Choose the file for your operating system and processor architecture: x86-64 is for conventional 64-bit Intel or AMD systems, while ARM64 is for supported ARM systems. The macOS package is labeled universal. These asset names are not a complete minimum-operating-system compatibility matrix; check the release and project documentation for the requirements relevant to your device.
Zen’s official download page lists macOS, Windows, and Linux availability and offers the current download. It describes Zen as being in beta and presents it as free to download. That page is the better starting point for a normal installation, not for obtaining the archived 1.12.3b build.

How to verify the 1.12.3b download
First download the asset from the official release page, then calculate its SHA-256 hash. On Linux:

Get-FileHash .filename -Algorithm SHA256Compare the resulting hash character-for-character with the SHA-256 value shown for that exact asset on GitHub. A checksum is asset-specific: for example, compare a Windows installer with the installer’s hash, not with a Linux archive’s hash. If the hash differs, do not run the file. Delete it, download again from the official page, and confirm that both the filename and architecture are the ones you intended. If a fresh download still fails verification, do not install it.
Downgrading? Protect your browser profile
Do not assume a profile used by a newer Zen version can safely be opened by 1.12.3b. Back up important browser data first, and use a separate test profile for the older build. Avoid pointing it at your everyday profile unless you understand the downgrade risk.

Profile locations can vary with the operating system and installation method. Zen’s Linux installation guide, for example, documents different profile paths for Flatpak and tarball installations. Record which build and installation channel you used so you can keep test data separate from your normal setup.

No—not necessarily. The current Linux guide describes several installation routes, including Flatpak through Flathub, direct tarball or AppImage downloads, and a tarball installation script. The documented script is:

It is a current installation workflow, not a version selector for archived releases. To obtain 1.12.3b, use its matching asset on the historical GitHub release page if it remains available.

Stable and Twilight are different channels
Version 1.12.3b was labeled a stable release. Twilight is a separate experimental channel: Zen’s Linux guide warns that it can contain newer changes and bugs. Do not treat Twilight as a directly comparable stable replacement for 1.12.3b, or assume that instructions for one channel apply to the other.
When Zen may not be the right fit
If your priority is a long-established enterprise support ecosystem, centrally managed browser policies, or compatibility with Chromium-specific websites and tooling, consider whether Zen meets those needs before switching. Firefox is the closest upstream-oriented alternative; a Chromium-based browser may be a better match when a site or enterprise system specifically requires Chromium compatibility. These are general fit considerations, not claims about a particular defect in 1.12.3b.
