Zen Browser 1.11.5b was a small stable-channel update released on April 19, 2025. Its notes document two changes: a fix for window controls becoming inaccessible when element separation was set to 0, and the temporary disabling of automatic picture-in-picture (PiP) while Zen lacked a proper settings interface for it. This is now a historical release, not the version to choose for ordinary browsing; Zen’s official release notes list later stable builds, including v1.21.8b dated July 17, 2026.
What is Zen Browser 1.11.5b?
Zen is an open-source browser based on Firefox. The 1.11.5b identifier is Zen’s version number, not a Firefox version number. The available release record labels it a stable release; it does not establish that the “b” suffix means beta. The project repository provides its source code and links to project releases: Zen Browser on GitHub.
Version 1.11.5b was a patch in the 1.11 series, after the broader 1.11b release. Its release notes characterize it as a small update rather than a feature release.
What changed in 1.11.5b?
Element separation set to 0 could block window controls
The release notes say the update fixed a problem in which setting element separation to 0 prevented access to the window controls. The note does not specify a user-interface path or explain what the value means, so it is best understood narrowly: this particular setting value could interfere with access to those controls. It does not establish that every user encountered the issue or that the feature was universally defective.

Automatic picture-in-picture was disabled
Zen temporarily disabled automatic PiP until it could provide a proper settings interface for the behavior. That is not the same as saying all picture-in-picture functionality was removed: the documented change concerns automatic PiP, not whether users could invoke PiP manually or use Firefox’s underlying media capabilities.

Which builds were listed?
The historical release listing includes assets for the following platforms and formats. These are listed builds, not a guarantee of present-day hosting or support for every operating-system version or Linux distribution.

The release listing also provides SHA-256 checksums for its assets. A checksum is specific to the exact file: use the hash shown for the asset you downloaded, not one for another platform or package. To calculate a hash locally, use sha256sum FILE on Linux, shasum -a 256 FILE on macOS, or Get-FileHash .FILE -Algorithm SHA256 in Windows PowerShell. Compare the result with the corresponding published hash. A match checks that the file agrees with that hash; by itself, it does not establish that an old build is current or suitable for sensitive daily browsing.

For official project releases, start at the Zen Browser GitHub releases index. The historical record is useful for identifying the release and its assets, but it does not guarantee that every old file remains available. For normal current use, use Zen’s official download page.
Should you install it today?
For ordinary browsing, choose a current build from Zen’s official download page rather than 1.11.5b. Zen’s official release notes list later releases, including stable v1.21.8b dated July 17, 2026. The old version predates many subsequent browser changes; the available release information does not establish the precise security status of 1.11.5b, so it would be misleading to assign it a specific vulnerability or call it safe.

- Testing a site, extension, or workflow against that older environment.
- Archiving the release or investigating its automatic-PiP behavior or element-separation issue.
If you need it for one of those purposes, obtain the build from an official project source when available, verify the checksum for the exact asset, and keep it separate from everyday browsing. Record the operating system and architecture, profile state, and extensions used so the test can be reproduced.

How does 1.11.5b differ from 1.11b?
Zen 1.11b was the earlier, broader release; 1.11.5b was a later patch. The removal of web panels for security and maintenance reasons was described in the 1.11b release record, not in the documented 1.11.5b changes. The two records should not be treated as one changelog.
How to test or downgrade without risking your main profile
- Close Zen completely. Do not change versions while the browser is still running.
- Back up your browser profile before opening it with a different version. Profile compatibility can be a concern when downgrading; no version-specific profile path is established here.
- Install or unpack the historical build separately if possible. Avoid replacing your current browser installation for a one-off test.
- Start with a fresh profile. Check the behavior you need before opening your main profile or adding your usual extensions.
- Restore your current version if profile migration or extension compatibility causes problems. Keep the backup until you have confirmed your current setup works.
Do not assume that current Zen settings paths match those in 1.11.5b; the interface has changed since the release.
