Yes, ZEM is real—but it is not a production electric car you can buy. Built by the TU/ecomotive student team associated with Eindhoven University of Technology and unveiled on July 21, 2022, ZEM is a proof-of-concept vehicle designed to capture small amounts of carbon dioxide from ambient air while driving.
Its “air-cleaning” claim needs an important qualification: ZEM targets CO₂, not every form of harmful air pollution. It demonstrates onboard carbon capture; it does not prove that ordinary electric cars can broadly purify urban air or become commercially viable carbon-negative vehicles.
What is ZEM?
ZEM is associated with “Zero Emission Mobility” and was created by TU/ecomotive, a sustainable-mobility student team linked to Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands.

That distinction matters. ZEM is a functioning student prototype and demonstration platform, not a certified production model, retail EV or announced consumer product.
How does ZEM capture CO₂?
The basic process is straightforward:
- Ambient air enters the vehicle as it moves.
- The air passes through specially developed filters.
- The filter captures some of the CO₂ in that air.
- The captured material is stored for later handling.
TU/ecomotive describes this as a form of direct air capture. However, the public project pages do not disclose the filter chemistry, sorbent type, airflow rate, capture efficiency, pressure drop, regeneration method or energy required per kilogram of CO₂ captured.
That missing information is significant. Capturing carbon is not the same as permanently removing it from the atmosphere. The stored CO₂ must eventually be permanently sequestered, converted into a stable product or otherwise managed. If it is released during regeneration, transport, processing or disposal, the climate benefit is reduced.
How much CO₂ can it capture?
A secondary report states that ZEM’s filter could capture approximately 2 kilograms of CO₂ over 20,000 kilometres, with the filter becoming full after roughly 320 kilometres.
Those figures should be treated as reported project performance rather than independently audited results. TU/ecomotive’s primary pages do not publish a complete test protocol.
Two kilograms over 20,000 kilometres works out to about 0.1 gram of captured CO₂ per kilometre. That is an interesting proof-of-concept result, but a very small quantity compared with the emissions associated with vehicle manufacturing, battery production, charging, maintenance and end-of-life processing.

Is ZEM carbon-neutral or carbon-negative?
TU/ecomotive says ZEM was designed around the emissions generated during production, use and end-of-life. The team has also stated that its life-cycle analysis concluded the driving-phase filters could compensate for the vehicle’s total life-cycle emissions.
That is a project objective and an attributed life-cycle conclusion—not independently verifiable proof that ZEM achieves net-negative emissions in real-world use. The public sources reviewed do not provide enough detail to reproduce the analysis, including its assumptions about:
- battery materials and manufacturing;
- electricity used for charging;
- 3D-printing energy and materials;
- filter manufacture and replacement;
- energy required to regenerate or handle the filter;
- the final fate of captured CO₂; and
- end-of-life processing.
It helps to separate four claims:
- Tailpipe-zero: an electric drivetrain has no combustion tailpipe.
- Carbon-capturing: the vehicle collects some CO₂ while operating.
- Lifecycle-neutral: total emissions are claimed to balance out.
- Carbon-negative: permanent CO₂ removal exceeds total emissions.
ZEM clearly belongs in the carbon-capturing category. The lifecycle-neutral and carbon-negative descriptions require stronger, independently reviewable evidence than the public material provides.
Does ZEM clean harmful air pollution?
Not in the broad sense suggested by the headline. The disclosed system targets atmospheric CO₂, a greenhouse gas. It is not described as a general-purpose filter for:
Recommended Free Tools
- PM2.5 or PM10;
- brake and tyre particles;
- nitrogen oxides;
- carbon monoxide;
- volatile organic compounds;
- ozone; or
- road dust.
An electric drivetrain eliminates combustion tailpipe emissions, but it does not eliminate non-exhaust particles or the environmental impacts of manufacturing a vehicle. ZEM should therefore be described as an electric prototype that attempts to capture CO₂ from ambient air, not as an urban air purifier.

What other technologies does ZEM use?
3D-printed structure and body panels
According to TU/ecomotive, the monocoque and body panels were developed for additive manufacturing with circular plastics. The goals were to reduce manufacturing waste and make components easier to reuse or recycle.
3D printing does not automatically make a vehicle low-carbon. Its environmental result depends on the source and durability of the material, printer energy, post-processing, repairability and end-of-life treatment.
Recycled carbon black
ZEM used recycled carbon black from discarded tyres in parts of its finish or refinishing process, in collaboration with Black Bear Carbon.

Solar panels
Solar panels were integrated into the roof. They are best understood as a supplementary energy feature: the reviewed sources do not disclose panel output, annual energy yield or the percentage of driving energy supplied by solar generation.
Bidirectional charging
The concept was designed to support bidirectional charging, allowing its battery to send energy back to a home or another load. In principle, that could let the vehicle act as a temporary battery when renewable electricity is unavailable.
It does not mean that ZEM—or every current EV—can automatically power a house. Vehicle hardware, a compatible charger, software, electrical configuration and local approval are all required.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What is known about the battery and range?
Battery partner Cleantron reported that ZEM used a modular system based on multiple P4X 48V battery modules. A compact, lightweight portable battery pack was also available as a configuration option.
The reviewed sources do not establish a standardized EPA, WLTP or other official range rating. They also do not provide verified consumer specifications for battery capacity, charging time, top speed, acceleration, passenger capacity, crash-test performance or filter replacement cost.
What are the practical barriers?
A vehicle-mounted capture system must move air through a filter while the vehicle is operating. Fans, pumps, compressors, heaters or regeneration equipment can consume energy and reduce driving efficiency.
The public material does not disclose the system’s energy use per kilogram of CO₂ captured, pressure loss, performance at different speeds, or behaviour in rain, dust, cold and humidity. Cars also spend much of their time parked, moving slowly or sitting in traffic, so capture performance may differ substantially from ideal airflow conditions.

There are operational questions too: how often the filter needs servicing, whether it is washable or replaceable, who handles the captured material, what happens when it reaches capacity and whether the filter media can be recycled. The reviewed sources do not answer these questions.
A production version would additionally need validation for crash safety, battery safety, electromagnetic compatibility, pedestrian protection, camera-based mirror visibility, road-legal equipment and safe handling of any capture chemicals.
Can you buy a ZEM?
No—not as a normal consumer vehicle. The reviewed sources identify ZEM as a student-built concept car and provide no purchase page, price, reservation system, production schedule, dealer network or consumer signup route. TU/ecomotive’s own description presents it as a concept and technology demonstrator.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTU/ecomotive did announce a 2022 U.S. tour to showcase ZEM and discuss sustainable mobility. Verdict
ZEM is a legitimate and imaginative student-built electric prototype. Its important contribution is demonstrating how carbon capture, circular materials, solar generation, bidirectional charging, modular batteries and digital vehicle systems might be combined in one platform.
But its strongest claim is narrower than the viral headline: ZEM demonstrates onboard CO₂ capture. It does not broadly clean urban air, prove permanent carbon removal, or show that a commercially viable carbon-negative car is ready for the road.
