Yes—YouTube’s Erase Song tool can attempt to remove claimed music while preserving dialogue, ambience, and sound effects. It is designed for eligible audio Content ID claims, not every copyright problem, and the result is not guaranteed to be artifact-free. If selective removal fails, YouTube offers options to mute all sound in the claimed section or trim the section out entirely.
The feature’s major improvement was announced by YouTube’s Creator Insider channel on July 3, 2024. The current YouTube Studio workflow also carries an important warning: once an edit is saved, YouTube says it cannot be undone with the former “Revert to original” function. Download or preserve the original video before editing.
What YouTube’s Erase Song tool actually does
Erase Song addresses a common Content ID problem: background music triggers a claim, but muting the entire soundtrack would also remove the creator’s speech and sound effects.
When it works, YouTube attempts to isolate the claimed song and remove it from the affected section. Dialogue, room tone, ambience, and effects may remain. That wording matters: this is an automated separation process, not a guarantee of perfect vocal or stem extraction. Music can leave behind percussion, melody, warbling, phase-like artifacts, distorted speech, or abrupt changes in room tone.

Erase Song edits the audio in your uploaded video. It does not delete the song from the original recording, the rights holder’s catalog, or other YouTube videos.
YouTube documents the feature for audio claims. It will not resolve a visual claim involving footage, an ownership dispute, or every type of copyright restriction.
YouTube’s July 2024 Creator Insider announcement demonstrated the improved approach of removing claimed music instead of automatically silencing the entire soundtrack. YouTube’s current Help documentation remains the authority for the options available in your account.

Content ID claim versus copyright strike
A music-related notice in YouTube Studio is not automatically a copyright strike. A Content ID claimant may choose to:

- monetize the video;
- track its performance; or
- block it in some locations or worldwide.
A strike generally follows a valid formal copyright removal request, which can remove the video. YouTube explains the distinction in its Content ID claim guidance and its copyright removal-request guidance.
Erase Song can resolve an existing audio claim if all claimed audio is successfully removed. It does not guarantee protection from future claims, prevent a takedown, or grant you a license to use the song.
How to use Erase Song in YouTube Studio
On desktop
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content.
- Filter your videos by Claims or Copyright, depending on the current Studio interface.
- Find the affected video and select the copyright notice in the Restrictions column.
- Choose See details.
- Under Content used, open Take action.
- Select Erase song.
- Choose Erase song to attempt selective music removal, or choose Mute all sound in the claimed segments for a more reliable but less selective edit.
- Preview the full affected passage, then save the edit if the result is acceptable.
Labels and menu placement can vary by account, region, and Studio rollout. The stable path is the claim-details page followed by Take action. Depending on the claim, YouTube may also show Trim out segment and Replace song.

- Open the YouTube Studio app.
- Tap Content.
- Select a video with a copyright restriction.
- Tap Restrictions, then Review issues.
- Select the relevant claim.
- Choose Erase song or Mute all sound in the claimed segments.
- Save the edit after reviewing the result.
The mobile workflow may expose fewer editing choices than desktop Studio. If an option is missing, check the claim from a desktop browser.

Before you click Save
Preserve the original first. YouTube says saved Studio edits cannot be undone through “Revert to original” as of June 2025. Download the published video or preserve a copy with Google Takeout before saving.
Preview the entire claimed passage with headphones—not just the first few seconds. Listen for damaged speech, missing effects, unnatural room tone, clicks, and abrupt audio changes at the claim boundaries. Also inspect every claim in the Restrictions panel. Removing one song will not clear a separate claim elsewhere in the video.
YouTube processes the edit asynchronously. Studio may show an editing-in-progress status and an estimate on the Videos list. If all claimed audio is successfully removed or replaced, the associated claim should clear without requiring a new upload.

Which remedy should you choose?
Use this decision framework:
- The claim is valid and speech must remain: Try Erase Song first.
- The claim is valid and reliability matters more than ambience: Use Mute all sound in the claimed segments.
- The music is important to the video: Use Replace song, a suitable YouTube Audio Library track, Creator Music where available, or an external re-edit.
- The claimed section is disposable: Trim out segment.
- You own the music or have permission: Preserve your license or ownership evidence and consider disputing instead of damaging the video to make the claim disappear.
- You have the original project file: An external re-edit usually gives you more control over transitions, ambience, and replacement music.
- You need to preserve the existing video’s URL and engagement: Prefer a successful Studio edit.
Do not dispute a claim simply because the music is in the background. Fair use and other copyright exceptions are fact-specific and jurisdiction-dependent; commentary or educational purpose alone does not automatically make music use lawful. YouTube provides general copyright guidance but does not make the final legal determination in an ownership dispute.

What to do when Erase Song fails
- Review the full preview. Check speech, effects, ambience, transitions, and the entire claimed time range.
- Try Mute all sound. This sacrifices all audio in the segment but is generally more dependable than selective separation.
- Try Trim out segment. Use it when silence or a shorter video is preferable to damaged audio.
- Try Replace song. Choose a track that covers the complete claimed period. If any claimed audio remains uncovered, the claim may remain.
- Dispute only when you have a real basis. Gather license documents, permissions, ownership records, or a carefully considered copyright-exception argument.
- Re-edit externally if necessary. Use the preserved original to rebuild the mix, then re-upload a corrected version if the Studio result is unacceptable.
Common failure conditions include music that is heavily mixed with speech or effects, residual music after processing, distorted dialogue, and multiple separate claims. A successful edit may clear one claim while leaving another unaffected. Clearing the claim also does not automatically guarantee monetization; advertiser-suitability decisions, other claims, and channel policies can still affect revenue.

YouTube is also expanding tools for finding, licensing, replacing, and generating music, but those workflows should not be conflated with Erase Song.
Dream Track, documented within Creator Music and Music Assistant, can generate four loopable instrumental options of approximately 60 seconds from an English prompt of up to 85 characters. That is an audio-creation workflow—not proof that the generated music is integrated directly into the Erase Song claim-removal panel.
YouTube’s Creator Music documentation says Creator Music is available to U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program and describes a transition beginning in August 2026 from paid licenses toward no-cost and revenue-sharing tracks. Paid licenses could be purchased through August 10, 2026 under the documented terms; existing licenses remain valid until expiration, while unused purchases were subject to refund terms.

Availability and terms can change by country, account, and product rollout. AI-generated does not automatically mean copyright-free everywhere. YouTube describes Dream Track as experimental and notes that copyright treatment for AI-generated works remains complex and evolving.
Should you buy music for this problem?
Usually not if you only need to remove one song from an already-published video. YouTube Studio’s native tools may solve that immediate claim without a separate purchase.
For future uploads, the YouTube Audio Library offers music and sound effects intended for use on YouTube, with attribution requirements identified where applicable. For creators who need broader catalogs or off-platform rights, compare any external library’s monetization permissions, Shorts and livestream coverage, client and advertising rights, attribution rules, Content ID policy, regional availability, subscription terms, and whether use continues after cancellation.
A paid library is more defensible when you need a repeatable supply of cleared music, distinctive genres, client or commercial-use coverage, or a workflow that prevents claims before publication. It is a poor fit for a one-off claim that Erase Song, Replace Song, Trim, Mute all, or the Audio Library can resolve.
The practical answer
For a valid claim on nonessential background music, download the original, preview the claimed passage, and try Erase Song when preserving speech and effects matters. If the separation sounds damaged, choose Mute all sound or Trim out segment. If the video needs music, use Replace song with coverage for the entire claimed period. If the claim is wrong and you have evidence, dispute it rather than altering a video that does not infringe.
The upgrade makes YouTube’s built-in editor more useful, but it remains a best-effort repair tool—not a license, a universal copyright solution, or a substitute for keeping your original project files.
