No—YouTube TV is not newly coming back to Roku. Google and Roku reached a multiyear agreement on December 8, 2021, and YouTube TV returned to Roku then. As of August 18, 2026, Google’s compatibility information still lists Roku players and Roku TVs as supported in the United States. If you own a compatible Roku, you can try installing the YouTube TV app; there is no need to replace your device just because of the old dispute. (Google’s supported-device list)
What happened, and when?
The dispute is old, but headlines that say YouTube TV is “finally coming back” can make it sound current. Here is the sequence: Roku removed YouTube TV from its channel store for new downloads in April 2021; Google offered an in-app workaround in May; and the companies settled in December.

The agreement was described as multiyear, but the cited record does not establish a current expiration date. There is no basis here for treating the 2021 restoration as a new 2026 return.

Why did Roku and Google disagree?
The companies gave competing accounts of the negotiations. Their public statements explain what each side alleged; they do not independently establish that either account was wholly correct.

Roku’s account
Roku said Google sought preferential treatment for YouTube in Roku’s search interface and special technical or platform privileges beyond ordinary YouTube TV carriage. Roku characterized some of those requests as anticompetitive. These were Roku’s claims, not findings established by an independent public adjudication in the cited sources. Google’s account
Google said Roku used YouTube TV renewal talks to renegotiate a separate agreement for the main YouTube app. Google denied asking for access to Roku user data or interference with search results, and argued that Roku’s technical requirements could limit support for newer video formats and features. What Roku users experienced during the standoff
Three related things were involved: the main YouTube app, the separate YouTube TV app, and the YouTube TV subscription service. Roku’s channel store was the distribution point for the apps, not the subscription itself.

- New installations: After Roku removed YouTube TV from its store in April 2021, new users could not download the standalone app there.
- Existing app users: Existing YouTube TV customers initially kept access through the app already on their Roku devices.
- Temporary workaround: Google added a route into YouTube TV from the regular YouTube app while negotiations continued. It was a workaround, not a merger of the two services. (YouTube Blog)
Google also said it was working with partners to provide alternative streaming devices if Roku access deteriorated. That was a contingency discussed during the dispute, not a reason for current Roku users to buy another device.
How to watch YouTube TV on a Roku now
In the United States, start with the standalone YouTube TV app. Roku menu wording can vary by model, software version, language, and account region, so use the store or search option available on your device.
- From the Roku home screen, open Streaming Store or Search.
- Search for YouTube TV, rather than just “YouTube.”
- Select the official YouTube TV app and choose the option to add or install it.
- Open the app and sign in with the Google account associated with your YouTube TV membership.
The app does not make the service free: watching requires a YouTube TV membership. Google currently lists Roku players and Roku TVs among supported device categories, but compatibility can change. It specifically lists Roku TVs as supported across all models; that should not be read as a permanent guarantee for every Roku player or future software configuration. Check your country and account
The cited Google device-support information covers YouTube TV in the United States. A device or Roku account configured for another country may not show the app, and available programming depends on location. Confirm that you are using the intended Roku account and Google account. Check the specific Roku model and software
Google says device support can change, and an older player may have compatibility or performance issues even though Roku remains a supported platform. Recover from an app problem
- Restart the Roku and check for available Roku software updates.
- If the app is installed and Roku allows removal, remove it and reinstall it from the store.
- Confirm that the Google account signed into the app has the membership you expect.
- Check YouTube TV’s support channels or service status, then try the account on another supported device to see whether the problem is Roku-specific.
Reinstalling may help with an app fault, but it will not fix a country restriction, account or membership issue, service outage, or unsupported hardware.
Consider Roku account or app availability issues
Roku says an app or subscription may no longer be available, a user may have multiple Roku accounts, and providers can remove apps from its platform. Those general possibilities are worth checking if an expected app is missing. (Roku support on unavailable apps and subscriptions)

Watching YouTube TV on a Roku does not by itself mean Roku bills you. If you joined directly through YouTube TV, manage the membership with Google/YouTube. If you subscribed through Roku’s billing system, manage it through Roku. Check the billing name on your receipt or account before cancelling, changing plans, or requesting a refund; Roku directs users to its subscription tools for Roku-billed memberships and distinguishes those from provider-managed subscriptions. Is using YouTube TV on Roku a good fit?
It can be convenient if you already own a supported Roku and want live television, DVR, and household profiles in one app. The device history alone is not a reason to replace a Roku that works for you.
- It may fit if you want a broad live-TV service, value unlimited DVR, and prefer keeping your television apps in Roku’s interface.
- It may not fit if you mainly watch on-demand entertainment, need only a small number of channels, or need channels not included in your chosen plan.
- Check carefully if you are outside the United States, travel between locations, or own an older Roku player; availability and device support are not universal or permanent. (Google’s restrictions information)
If the app will not install or runs poorly on your specific Roku, Google lists other supported device categories, including Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV/Google TV, smart TVs, game consoles, and Chromecast-compatible setups. A different live-TV service, network app, or league subscription may also suit a narrower need, but compare current prices, channel lineups, DVR, and location availability before switching.
