The often-quoted 1280 × 720 size is still important, but mainly because YouTube’s Test & Compare feature uses it as a 720p threshold: if any experiment thumbnail is below 1280 × 720, YouTube downscales every thumbnail in that experiment to 854 × 480. YouTube presents 3840 × 2160 as a recommendation, not a universal minimum upload size.
The current YouTube thumbnail sizes at a glance
| Use case | YouTube guidance in 2026 | Aspect ratio | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160 pixels | 16:9 | YouTube says the image should be as large as possible; minimum stated width is 640 pixels. |
| Test & Compare experiment | Keep every submitted image at or above 1280 × 720 | 16:9 | Below that threshold, all experiment thumbnails are downscaled to 854 × 480. |
| YouTube Short | 2160 × 3840 pixels | 9:16 | Minimum stated height is 640 pixels; custom Shorts thumbnails can currently be added in Studio on a computer. |
The dimensions above come from YouTube’s current help guidance checked on September 30, 2026. They are specification values, not a promise of higher click-through rate or watch time.
Why 1280 × 720 is still mentioned
1280 × 720 is 720p HD and remains a familiar 16:9 canvas. YouTube’s Test & Compare documentation gives it a specific role: when any thumbnail in an experiment is lower than 720p (1280 × 720), all experiment thumbnails are reduced to 480p (854 × 480). That rule is about experiment processing, not the normal custom-thumbnail recommendation.
Therefore, use the numbers this way:
- For a normal standard-video thumbnail, start at 3840 × 2160.
- For an experiment, never include an image below 1280 × 720 if you want to avoid the documented downscale.
- Do not describe 1280 × 720 as “wrong.” It is a valid 720p format and a current Test & Compare threshold.
- Do not describe 3840 × 2160 as mandatory. YouTube calls it a recommendation and separately states a 640-pixel minimum width.
Standard-video thumbnail requirements
Resolution and proportions
Set a 16:9 canvas at 3840 pixels wide by 2160 pixels high. Keep important text, faces and logos away from the outer edge so that compression, responsive layouts or device previews do not make them difficult to read. This is practical design advice, not an additional YouTube requirement.

File format and upload size
YouTube lists JPG and PNG as example image formats. The stated video-thumbnail file limits depend on where you upload:
| Upload location | Listed limit | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | 2 MB | Export a compressed JPG or a carefully optimized PNG that remains under 2 MB. |
| Desktop | 50 MB | You have substantially more room for a high-resolution export; still remove unnecessary metadata and check the final file. |
Do not apply the old blanket rule that every thumbnail must be below 2 MB. YouTube’s current guidance distinguishes mobile and desktop limits.
Eligibility and policy
Custom thumbnails are available to verified accounts. The image must follow YouTube Community Guidelines; YouTube warns that violations can result in rejection and a strike. Daily upload limits can vary by region or channel history, so a temporary limit is not necessarily caused by the pixel dimensions.
Shorts use a different shape
A Short is vertical, so use 2160 × 3840 pixels at 9:16 rather than the landscape 16:9 canvas. YouTube states a minimum image height of 640 pixels. Its current help page says custom thumbnails for Shorts can be added in YouTube Studio on a computer.

Do not rotate a standard 3840 × 2160 thumbnail and assume it will work well for a Short. Recompose the design for a tall frame: shorten headlines, enlarge the principal subject and check how the image reads when reduced on a phone.
Choosing a working canvas
Use 3840 × 2160 when you control the source
A large source gives you flexibility to crop, reposition and export variants while retaining detail. It also follows YouTube’s current top-line recommendation for standard videos. If your design tool or source image cannot produce that size, 1280 × 720 still preserves the correct 16:9 shape and remains above the stated 640-pixel minimum width.
Use 1280 × 720 deliberately for experiments or lightweight workflows
At 1280 × 720, your file is already at the Test & Compare threshold. This can simplify editing on an older computer or reduce export size, but do not mix a sub-720p image into an experiment if avoiding the 854 × 480 downscale matters.
Check the exported file, not only the editor canvas
- Open the image properties and confirm width, height and file type.
- Check the compressed file size against the limit for the device you will use to upload.
- View the image at a small preview size. If the title disappears, simplify it rather than relying on extra pixels.
- Keep the original project file so you can produce a corrected export without rebuilding the design.
A practical upload workflow
- Verify the channel before attempting to use a custom thumbnail.
- For a standard video, create a 3840 × 2160, 16:9 image; for a Short, create a 2160 × 3840, 9:16 image.
- Export as JPG or PNG. If uploading from a phone, keep the video thumbnail below the listed 2 MB limit; desktop uploads are listed up to 50 MB.
- In YouTube Studio, open the video’s details, choose the custom-thumbnail option, select the exported file and save.
- If the image is rejected, record the exact message, confirm the pixel dimensions and file size, and try a fresh JPG export before changing the design.
Interface labels can change, and availability of features such as experiments can vary by account. The dimensions and limits above are the stable parts of the current help guidance.

Using Test & Compare without an accidental downscale
Before starting an experiment, inspect every candidate image. A single file below 1280 × 720 causes YouTube to downscale all experiment thumbnails to 854 × 480, according to the Test & Compare help page. Export all candidates at the same 16:9 dimensions when possible, and keep the text and subject placement comparable so the resolution change is not confused with a design change.
Remember what the experiment rule does not establish: it does not say that 1280 × 720 is the preferred size for every upload, and it does not provide an audience-performance guarantee for either resolution.
Troubleshooting common problems
“The thumbnail is too large” on a phone
The current mobile limit listed for video thumbnails is 2 MB. Re-export as JPG, reduce quality gradually, remove unused metadata and check the resulting file size. Do not reduce the canvas below the dimensions you need until compression has been tried.
A desktop upload works, but mobile does not
Desktop and mobile have different listed limits: 50 MB versus 2 MB. Prepare a mobile-safe export if your workflow includes both devices.

Test & Compare makes every image look softer
Inspect the smallest candidate. If it is below 1280 × 720, YouTube’s documented behavior is to downscale all experiment thumbnails to 854 × 480. Replace that candidate with an image at or above 1280 × 720 and start the experiment again.
The custom-thumbnail option is missing
Custom thumbnails require a verified account. Daily upload limits may also vary by region or channel history. Verify the account status and check whether a temporary limit is shown before changing image dimensions.
The image is rejected despite correct dimensions
Dimensions alone do not guarantee acceptance. Review the image against YouTube Community Guidelines, remove prohibited material and try a clean JPG or PNG export. A policy rejection is different from a resolution or file-size error.
A Short thumbnail is cropped unexpectedly
Confirm that the source is vertical 2160 × 3840 (9:16), not a landscape 3840 × 2160 file. Rebuild the composition for the tall frame instead of rotating the landscape design.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations
Pixel dimensions affect editing memory, upload time and compression effort, but YouTube’s specification does not claim that a larger thumbnail automatically performs better with viewers. Use the largest practical source, then optimize the exported file for the device and workflow you actually use.
- Reliability: Keep a master file and a known-good JPG export. If an upload fails, you can retry without recreating the artwork.
- Consistency: Use one documented canvas for standard videos and another for Shorts so a team does not accidentally submit a vertical file to a landscape video.
- Storage: Archive the editable master separately from the compressed upload copy.
- Experiments: Check every candidate against 1280 × 720 before submitting; the lowest-resolution file controls the documented downscale behavior.

If you need a screenshot of a webpage while preparing a thumbnail reference, ScreenshotNeo provides a GET-based screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It captures PNG, JPEG or WebP images, or PDFs. This is for capturing a webpage or preview, not for uploading a YouTube thumbnail.
One request is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Every feature is included on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, with yearly billing giving two months free.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does using 3840 × 2160 guarantee more views?
No. YouTube’s dimensions are technical guidance. They do not establish a guaranteed click-through rate, watch time or ranking benefit.
Can I submit a 1280 × 720 thumbnail for a normal video?
It is a valid 16:9, 720p-sized image and exceeds YouTube’s stated 640-pixel minimum width, but YouTube’s current recommendation for standard videos is the larger 3840 × 2160 canvas.
Are Shorts and standard-video thumbnails interchangeable?
No. Standard videos use a landscape 16:9 recommendation, while Shorts use a vertical 9:16 recommendation and a different pixel size.
