“YouTube Team sent you a video” is a subject line used in a documented phishing campaign. Treat an unexpected message with that wording as suspicious: don’t click its links, download attachments, reply, or enter your Google password or verification codes. A YouTube logo—or even a sender address that appears to be [email protected]—is not enough to prove the message is safe. Verify any claimed account issue by opening YouTube or your Google Account directly.
What is the “YouTube Team sent you a video” email?
On April 5, 2023, TeamYouTube warned about phishing messages impersonating YouTube channels. Reported subject lines included “YouTube Team sent you a video” and “YouTube policy change.” The messages claimed to share a video or policy information and could include a link or file to review. Some versions used urgency, including a threat that an account would be restricted unless the recipient acted within seven days. TeamYouTube’s warning advised users not to click links or download files in these messages.
The wording is a known phishing lure, but a subject line alone cannot establish whether a particular email is fake: legitimate video-sharing notifications can also arrive by email. The warning documents a campaign in 2023; it does not establish that the same campaign has been continuously active since then. If you receive a similar message now, verify it independently rather than trusting or dismissing it on the subject line alone.

Signs the message may be phishing
- It says YouTube shared a video, policy document, monetization notice, or account warning you were not expecting.
- It pressures you to act immediately or threatens account loss, demonetization, or restriction.
- It asks you to review something through an unfamiliar link, download a document, or open an attachment.
- The destination is not an official Google or YouTube website, or the page asks you to sign in again unexpectedly.
- It requests your password, a two-step verification code, recovery code, payment details, or channel-management credentials.
- The message has awkward wording, unusual formatting, or an unfamiliar sender channel.
These clues can raise suspicion, but their absence does not prove safety. The documented campaign reportedly used a visible sender address that appeared as [email protected]. Sender names and visible addresses, logos, thumbnails, and delivery to Gmail are not reliable tests by themselves. Do not try to authenticate the message by replying to it or following its button.

How to check safely
- Leave the email unopened or keep it away from its links and attachments. Don’t use the message’s buttons, reply address, or embedded sign-in page.
- Open YouTube yourself. Use the YouTube app, a saved bookmark, or type the address. For a creator account, check YouTube Studio for channel alerts, policy notices, copyright notifications, or other account messages.
- Check Google Account security directly. Visit the Google Account Security page and review recent security activity, signed-in devices, recovery options, and third-party access. Labels and screen layouts can change, so use the current Security page rather than relying on an old menu path.
- Verify a shared video separately. Check YouTube directly or contact the supposed sender through a contact method you already trust—not the email’s reply address.
- Report the email. In Gmail, use the message menu’s Report phishing option. Google’s Gmail phishing guidance explains reporting suspicious messages.
A real account notice may exist, but you can reach it through the service without using the suspicious message. YouTube can send legitimate account communications; the safe response is independent verification, not assuming that every email mentioning policy is fraudulent or that every branded email is genuine.
What to do, depending on what you did
If you only received the email
Don’t click, download, reply, or provide information. Report it as phishing and delete it. If the message mentions a genuine concern, check your account by navigating to YouTube or Google independently.

If you opened a link but entered nothing
Close the page and don’t continue through any sign-in, download, or authorization prompts. Opening a web page does not automatically mean your device is infected; risk depends on what the page did, the browser and operating system, and whether you downloaded or approved anything. Check your downloads and browser extensions, install current browser and operating-system updates, and run a scan with reputable security software if anything downloaded or the device behaves unusually. Review Google Account security activity and watch for unfamiliar sign-in alerts or password-reset messages.
If you downloaded a file but did not open it
Do not open it. Delete the file, then empty the device’s trash or recycle bin and run an up-to-date security scan. If the file is on a work device, contact your IT or security team and follow its instructions rather than trying to investigate it yourself.

If you opened or ran a file
If you suspect active compromise, disconnect the device from the internet and use another trusted device for account recovery. Run reputable security software, update the operating system and browser, and get professional help if the device contains sensitive business, financial, or creator data. A scan can help but cannot guarantee that every threat is detected or removed. If you entered account credentials afterward, change them from a separate trusted device and revoke unfamiliar sessions.
If you entered your Google password or a verification code
Act as though the account may be compromised:
- From a trusted device, go directly to your Google Account Security page and change the password. If you cannot sign in, use Google Account recovery.
- Review recent security activity and devices, then sign out sessions you do not recognize. Check that the recovery email and phone are still yours, and review passkeys, two-step verification methods, and third-party app access. Remove anything unfamiliar.
- If you reused the exposed password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too—using a different, unique password for each.
- For a YouTube channel, audit channel permissions and any Brand Account managers. Check for unfamiliar uploads, livestreams, channel details, monetization changes, and payment-related changes.
- Keep the phishing email, its sender details, URLs, and screenshots in case Google, YouTube, your organization, or law enforcement needs them. Avoid forwarding the message to people who might click its contents.
Google’s account security guidance has further steps. If someone has taken over your channel or you have lost access, use YouTube’s hacked-channel recovery form. A password change alone may not remove an attacker’s sessions, recovery methods, or added channel permissions, so review each of those too.

If you entered payment or banking information
Contact your bank or payment provider using the official number on its card or website, explain what was exposed, and follow its instructions. Don’t use contact details supplied in the suspicious email.
Protect a creator account before the next message arrives
- Use a unique password for your Google Account and store it in a reputable password manager if that suits your setup.
- Turn on Google 2-Step Verification or use a passkey where available on your account and devices. These reduce risk but do not make suspicious links, downloads, or approval prompts safe.
- Keep recovery email and phone details current, and periodically review signed-in devices and third-party access on the Security page.
- Give channel access only to people who need it, use the least access they need, and review managers and permissions regularly.
- For business or creator work, consider a separate browser profile or device for channel administration. This can limit exposure, but it is not a substitute for account security or careful verification.
Reporting options
Use Gmail’s built-in phishing report option for the message. If you are in the United States, you can also report fraud to the Federal Trade Commission; for significant cybercrime or business impact, consider the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center. If your Google or YouTube access is compromised, prioritize the official recovery processes linked above.
