Yes. YouTube invited some Premium members to try a redesigned desktop watch page in 2024. The experiment, called “Redesigned Watch Page,” moved a video’s title, description and comments into a side panel and gave recommended videos more space beneath the player. It was a limited test—not a permanent redesign for all Premium subscribers—and the reported test period ended July 1, 2024.
What changed in the redesigned watch page?
The test changed the layout of YouTube’s desktop video-watching page, not necessarily the rest of YouTube.com. In the familiar layout, the title, description and comments appear below the player, while recommendations sit alongside it. In the test layout, those details and comments moved to a panel beside the video, while larger recommendation cards appeared underneath.
YouTube said the experiment was intended to make related videos easier to discover and comments easier to access. The arrangement gave recommendations more visual prominence, but it could also make the page feel more like a discovery feed than a focused video player. The exact presentation could vary between accounts or test cohorts.
How eligible members opted in
When the experiment was available, the route was:
- Sign in to the Google account with an active YouTube Premium membership.
- Visit youtube.com/new.
- Find “Redesigned Watch Page” and select “Try it out.”
- Open a video in a desktop web browser to see the test.
- Use the experiment’s “Feedback” control to share a response.
YouTube’s help page for Premium experiments describes this general process. When an experiment is active, the page may also offer a “Turn Off” control to leave it. The 2024 redesign reportedly included a feedback form.

Premium did not guarantee access
A Premium membership was a requirement for this Premium experiment, not a promise that every subscriber could join. YouTube says experiments may be limited by territory, device, available spaces or other eligibility criteria. They can also have an end date, and some never become features for everyone. YouTube distinguishes such tests from broader releases in its explanation of experiments and rollouts.
If the redesign was missing from youtube.com/new, that did not necessarily indicate a problem with your account. The test may have ended, your account may not have been selected, or the feature may not have been available in your region or on your device. There is no documented way to force eligibility by changing browsers or clearing cookies.

Why some viewers objected
Contemporary coverage reported criticism from users who saw the layout. Complaints included that the title and description felt detached from the video, that browsing comments could involve scrolling the whole page and moving the player out of view, and that larger recommendations competed for attention with the video being watched. These are reported reactions, not published results from a controlled usability study. YouTube did not publish evidence showing whether the test improved satisfaction or engagement.

A June 7, 2024 report said the Premium experiment was scheduled to run through July 1, 2024. That history is a reason to treat it as an experiment rather than proof of a permanent launch.

Is the redesign available now?
The available official description establishes that YouTube offered the test in 2024; it does not confirm that this exact “Redesigned Watch Page” experiment is active now. You can check youtube.com/new for experiments currently offered to your account, but do not assume a redesign is available just because you have Premium. A similar layout seen by one user could be another account-level test or a later interface change, not necessarily the same 2024 experiment.
Do not subscribe to Premium solely to get this redesign: the reported test period ended in 2024, and experiment access is neither universal nor permanent. If you have opted into an experiment and dislike it, return to youtube.com/new and select “Turn Off” if that option is shown. YouTube says experiments also end automatically at their scheduled date.
